Does anyone know an old time diesel mechanic who has a good degree of knowledge re: IH injection pumps as on the TD 18 or TD20 crawlers.

I have a service manual for that pump in the shop.I haven't had time to check it out yet but if your in refrence to your post yesterday about the timing difference between the front and back heads I believe the pump you have is a twin plunger pump. One plunger supplies fuel to the front head and the other plunger supplies fuel to the rear head.If you have a timing imbalance between the two that indicates an internal timing problem.I will have to reserch that a little more as it has been too many years since I've worked on those pumps.

i am starting to question the inner workings of the second injection pump. When i first got the cat i did not like the way it ran and assuming it had a good deal of hours, i rebuilt the engine completely. At that time i changed the inj. pump as apparently this new pump had about 4000 hrs on it-which for those pumps is peanuts.I ran the cat off and on for 3 or 4 yrs (300 hrs)and then the smoking problem started. The pump i put on then was the original.( after a amateur bench test).I am therefore suggesting that perhaps the original pump was faulty in the same area as the 4000 hr pump became faulty. My next step will now be to disassemble the 4000 hr pump and see if i can see any problem with the plunger settings because when one thinks of it this is the only aspect of the system where fuel delivery to the individual heads is proportioned. If anyone can expand on this ,please do.

After checking the service manual and rereading your first post where you stated that the exhaust temperatures were different on each stack I believe what you are experiencing is unequal fuel delivery between the two plungers rather than a timing problem. There is test equipment that is necesary to check this, since it is a little confusing I would rather you called me if you still are planing on working on this pump.I won't be home today but call me tomorrow at 308-382-6651
