What is TA on Farmall?

We only had Cases, one JD, small Ford and a D2. What is "TA"? I have been seeing this on a lot of the 50s and up Farmall/IH photo ads? Tractors we had, except D2 and JD R, had 3 point hitch, live PTO and hydraulics. Never heard anything about a TA. Is this what Farmall/IH calls their 3 point hitch system? Looking to buy farm tractor in a year or two for weekend place and I think Farmall may be OK, but... what is TA?

Remember when you were a little kid; pulling a big something with a rope. Next you were in the mud or soft ground and you had to downshift that make beleave tractor or truck you were driving? The TA does the same thing for real! Enjoy Jeff

Jim: Your respondants are all basically right. TA was one of the pioneers of power shift in tractors. It gave you two power shifted speeds in each gear. In the 70s and 80s some manufacturers went to a complete power shift, even as high as 15 speeds. That seems to have disappeared in favour 6 to 10 gears with up to 4 power shifts in each gear. I expect cost has been a big factor here.

IH called it torque amplifier Ford called it Dual Power, MF called it Multi Power all did the same thing droped gear ratio by 30-40% when tractor was under heavy load, ie. when ploughing stopping to change down a gear was not good probaly have to drop two gears to start away again having TA ment you could drop the gear speed without declutching providing as it sugests more Torque to the rear wheels, like wise once the plough was through the heavy soil part of the field you could move the lever back to high without declutching increasing speed esaily. Today's tractors still you use the same princabile only controled by an electrical switch operating a hydralic valves,and cltch pack's. Eric

The T/A you are asking about is Torque Amplifier. It is a planetary type gear reduction enabling the operator to "down shift" under heavy loads without the use of the clutch. Farmall introduced this feature on the Super MTA in 1954 and was a standard feature on their bigger models well into the late '70's

T/A stands for Torque Amplifier. I havent quite figured out what it is, but I think its basically a Hi/Lo Range? Like in stead of 1st/2nd/3rd/4th gears, you have .5/1st/1.5/2nd/2.5...etc you get the idea?

Again, I have no idea for sure, but it makes sense?

TA stands for torque amplifier. I'm sure someone here can give you a more detail description. It gives you more pulling power when you need it. It is a handle you pull to go from the high side to the low side to amplify the torque.

Thanks all, I figured out the torque amplifer part, but some of you explained the operation. Our Case 830 had dual range, or total of 8 speeds forward, two reverse, but you did have to clutch to shift. If you got good, it could be done while pulling a load and not loose all forward momentum. Glad to know this about Farmall sounds like a good feature.
