Super M won't move

Lately when I start up the Super M, get it warmed up, put it in gear (usually 3rd) and let out the clutch it pulls down the motor and doesn't move. Put it in first and let out the clutch slowly it does the same thing. Pop the clutch in first it lurches forward and then you can use any gear you want. It shifts into/out of gear without issue.

Is this a symptom of my gear lube freezing? or something else?

Got the water, ice and gear lube out on 1/1 and 1/2. There were over 16 gallons in there and I'd bet at least 6 of those gallons were water. Took quite a while to melt the ice all out with the kerosene and propane heaters. Flushed it with 10 gallons of diesel and then put the new lube in. Had to add the new lube a gallon at a time, new hydraulic reservoir wouldn't let a 5 gallon pail in.

Thanks!

B Bauman, this is just some finer points to what has been said. Water goes to the bottom and the oil floats on top, if you drive the tractor the oil and water mix to make an emulsion that will be carmel coloured about like cardboard. If you let you tractor sit for a few days until the water has sunk to the bottom you can let it off without changing the oil in the rear at that particular time, of course the water cannot be in the frozen mode. Just undo the rear drain plug slowly and about the last turn or two the water should start seeping out, let it run until you see gear oil coming...I took a gallon and a half of water out of an H I bought this way...I did change the rear oil as soon as it was convenient. Another H I have was so clogged with sludge that I had to stick a screw driver into the drain hole, then the water flowed and then oil...any Farmall that has been outside in its life will likely have water in the rear gear oil..... good luck and let us know how it goes..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Just a reminder; -Don't force the old girl to move. Have a friend that busted a bull gear and put a hole in the gear case when his M had taken on moisture. Good luck and Happy New Year!

Thanks guys. It did start once it got below freezing. Knew the gear lube was really dirty, got 15 gallons sitting there waiting for a really warm day.

Predicted high of 50 tomorrow, guess it doesn't get much better than that in Nebraska this time of year ;^)

After you drain the tranny oil , put about 6 gallon of heating oil in it, drive it around for 15 -- 20 minutes ----drain good and refil with new oil..

Probably water freezing in the differential. Do not be too energetic when it will not move. Might cause other damage. Drain the differential and change the oil in it and you will probably be fine. I assume this just started when it started to freeze outside. Did the tractor sit outside and possibly take on water ? The deck bolts are resessed and can act like funnels to draw the water into the differential and transmission area. Even a small electric heater overnight directed on the differential by the drawbar will probably melt the ice that needs to be drained. When you first pull the rear plug the water should stream out before the oil starts to run. Also, remember there is a front drain plug also. The majority of the grease comes out the rear plug. Been there done that. Let me know how it turns out. Jim

Pulls down the motor like a load on it like the clutch is slipping or kills the motor like something is stuck and can't turn? You just answered your own question.
