Using the F-4 mag on my Regular.Developed trouble starting it.Upon engine firing, the impulse would still continue to cilck-click-click, and the engine would just barely chug along, often stalling.Figured the impulse needed more lube,so I oiled the crap out of it.Didn't seem to help any.Figured maybe something wrong with impulse,so put on my spare F-4 mag.Starts easily now.My spare is built from leftovers, one of those that by rights shouldn't even work.So-another project for some snowy Sat. afternoon.Good thing I'm not in a hurry!

Dave,

It sounds to me that your impulse is functioning properly...If your motor is still running at low RPM's, then your impulse should still be tripping. The impulse will stop working when the tractor gets above approximately 200 RPM's. Are you able to get your tractor to idle up at all. If it will idle up, have you checked the spark on the old magneto? Sounds like it may be a weak spark possibly? The impulse on my M, with an H4 mag will trip when I idle my tractor down very low. I kinda like it when you can watch the fan blade go around and hear that impulse going click, click, click...Anyway, good that you have a spare mag and http://www.magneeders.com is a good source for information. Jack Chandler in Carthage is a well respected Magneto Scientist.

My $.02

If the impulse continues to engage, the engine is not reaching the propper RPMs at which the impulse stops working. You may have a problem with timing or carburetion that is limiting your engine speed.

Don't think there is any other problems. The only thing I changed was the mag.Now it starts fine.I'll have to check it over.

might be gummy from too much oil/heavy oil.

Could be it is gumed up.I also shot it with blaster 2 times thinking that might break it loose.Been oiling the mag with 10-30 from the oil can that I do the valve rockers with.Must be thats too heavy an oil? I have a copy of the operators manual, maybe ought to read it!

the manual calls for sewing machine or cream seperator oil. ie, light oil.
