F-12 Engine rebuild?

I am rebuilding a '38 F-12 and need some advice.

Does the oil pump to engine block interface require a gasket? Or is the machining good enough. I don't see one listed on the parts list.

How is the clutch pilot bearing lubricated? I don't see a crankshaft wick. Is there a zerk on the flywheel that I missed? Should this be repacked? With what?

The oil filter (canister) that was in the engine was brass. Are these 'cleanable'? I have seen paper ones that are presumably discardable. What is the conventional wisdom on IH oil filters?

Any other things to consider?

I just finished an F-012 engine rebuild about three months ago so I've been where you are now! Rice Equip. sells all the gaskets you'll need, and yes there is a gasket between the pump and the block. I'd be leery of using RTV or the like instead of the card stock gasket as you'd not want any of that stuff to get into your pump while running. As to you grease fitting...slowly rotate that flywheel until you see a deep hole in the side of it. Your fitting is in there. I'd probably replace it while you're in there. The brass filter...clean it up good and put it on your shelf. You're gonna have too much money into your engine to re-use an old filter. Authenticity is nice to a point, but a clean engine deserves a clean filter. You'll never get everything out of the old one and what's in there will surely find your new bearings. If you'd like a spreadsheet I made of all parts and supplies with costs for my 34' F-12, shoot me an email and I'll get it to ya! Good luck, Zak

If you have a 1938 F12 you probably have one of the last ones as the tractor changed to an F14 in 38. I have an F14 made in 38. There is a pipe plug by the clutch that you have to take out to grease the throwout bearing - grease fitting will be inside.

Kevin,I have been restoring a F12 and when I removed the oil pump there was a thin gasket under the oil pump,I could'nt find one so I made one out of a peice of gasket material.some one on this board said it should have a gasket. However I rebuilt my H and it had no gasket

you can use silicone to seal the housing or make a paper gasket. I would repack the pilot bearing with any modern gun grease. Yes the brass filter is cleanable. it was to be washed in kerosene. Take care of it, they are extreamly rare.
