I have lots of parts that are good enough to use, and I hate to throw away, but I don't have room to store. What do you guys think about a web-site (maybe Kim would start & manage it) that you could list any tractor parts you have that you would be willing to give to someone if they paid the shipping cost. If a person was looking for an item, they could type the "item name" & type of tractor, etc., and it would bring up a list of names and contact information. If an item was shipped, then the item would be removed from the list. Yes, I know; it might sell on E-bay, but most of us are not going to take the time to list all those items we have. Just one example, I have 5 used generators from Farmall A's and Super A; I might be able sell them on E-bay, but what if I could not. They get tossed in the metal scrap bin, and the parts are lost forever that someone might need. I am almost to the point, I have no room to work because I won't throw it away. Anyway, what do you fellows think? Please spare me all the crazy insults! Ha!

Lewis: Having read most of what your respondants said, I believe Brian Schmidt and Roger Wells have the best idea. Open to the best offer, will weed out the greed crowd. In doing this you would operate more like a tendering process, where you agree to hold the item open to offers for two weeks. Photos will much enhance this process. In fact the auction Kim now operates here at YT, would be much improved if she didn't allow reserve bids. People with reserve bids may as well just go to Photo Adds or Classified adds. This would truly make it an auction.

This would also work well for the guy with an item he can't identify. Just put in a picture, numerous people will recognize. In fact Kim doesn't even need to change the rules. You get enough items in there with no reserve bid, and the other guys will soon be history.

Lewis, I have read the replies to you idea, while not one to have the necessary skills and equipment to host a web page, I think it's a great idea! I would certainly use such a service and would contribute to it's running.
My 13 year old son were given a BN in need of many parts and I understand the enigines and sheet metal parts are the same in an A & B. If you can help us, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Greg

Maybe just an advertisement listing the parts you have and leave off the free part. People can contact you when they find something on the list they need and you guys can work out the $$ amounts. To me, a listing of available parts would be much better anyway. You don't need to advertise the free part. That does just bring out the greedy. If I find something that I truly need, I will ask the price and if it happens to be free, then it is just that much better....

I support the overall idea of having a simple way to let everyone know what you have, and don't need anymore. Sort of an "on-line swap meet". Keeping it current could be a problem and possibly create frustration. Allow the parties to work out the details... could be a sale, a trade or for free. It still allows the transaction, which is what we all want!

Great idea, and I hope that it works...but, what about those of us that can't identify old parts? I have 4 old machine sheds on my late Uncle's farm to clean out in the next few months. Each one is full of tractors, machinery, parts, and junk. Other than matching up colors, I'm at a loss to know what belongs to what.

For those of you who have 4 old sheds full, the excitment of that alone is worth $5.00 admission. To limit crowds you should find a knowledgable person and make a rough list of the makes. That would truly be an afternoon of excitment.

I think the best you could do on that one. Especially if you have to get those sheds cleaned out before selling. Maybe offer free pickings if we come our selfs. Take what you want as long as you take some you dont want :-)
No way you would be able to sort and ship 4 sheds worth of stuff in just a couple of months.
Thats the kind of treasure hunting I would love to do. Where are you at?

Tiny, lemme do some diggin in the junk shed, I pulled mine off after 12 volt conversion and replaced them with bolt up perlux. I know they're here somewhere but finding may take a bit.

I could do it. I could add a page to my web site and a link on the left pane for FREE STUFF.
Then its just a matter of copy/paste The items that are offered with the email of the person having them.
I will put up a test link so you can see what I mean.

If one of the those generators will fit my 45 BN not only will i pay the shipping I will pay you something for your time. My BN was given to me I have restored the old girl and it only has the bracket where the generator once sat. Let me know if we could work something out

Im not sure what parts if any are interchangable from a A/SA to a C/SC, but if there are any, can you tell me?

I found a gentleman that said he had a bunch of parts he was going to sell me, that was 8 days ago. Ive emailed him 4 times with no reply.

Im looking for a Tool Box, Seat bracket, spring and shock. Steering wheel, Distillate tank, uhh, Manifold (gas), you know the usual, but I cant find them anywhere used.
I cant afford to buy those parts new, well I could but it would make the tractor so expensive id never get close to getting out from under it should I ever come into financial trouble and have to sell it. Some people dont like used parts, I dont mind at all, if its sturdy, all there, it can be, with some work, made to look like new.

I think its a Very honorable thing your trying to do, but Id be willing to bet that people would take advantage of you and sell your parts on EBAY for a profit. Hate to say it, but its true.

Hi Tommy,
I don't believe any of the parts you listed except the distallate tank, manifold and steering wheel would interchange between the SA & SC.The only part I have on your list is a distillate tank, but it is already spoken for by someone else. There is one on E-bay for $20.00 (last time I looked). Good luck, maybe someone else can help you out.

Lewis: While I must admit I admire your idea, and indeed the support you have received from others, I think your idea has a flaw. "GREED" I hate to say this, however I think the vultures are going to be waiting for you guys. Over the years I have had this same acumulation of parts and pieces, several times. I have given numerous items away over the years. I have seen much of it show up for what I consider very high prices, and not being sold by the guys I gave it to either. I think the idea is a very noble gesture, I hope you can work the kinks out.

Hi Hugh, First let me say, I always enjoy your posts because you obviously like the offset Farmalls just like I do. In regards to the part give-away, even though there would probably be some people like you mentioned, there would, I think, be a lot more honest ones that might need the part someone is going to throw in the scrap pile. At the very least, even if someone gets the part to re-sale, the part is not lost forever, and someone that needed the part eventually gets it. As I mentioned earlier, we need someone with more computer skills than I have to manage a site for us. I hope someone will come forward and volunteer.

there is a lot of people out there that have no idea that guys are hunting for years for the very things they throw away! I kept stuff for years because I thought someone would want it but I had no market. Now all of a sudden the internet has opened up a whole new world. There is more stuff being listed every day and more guys finding it. A easy place to list that throwaway stuff right here on ytmag is a great idea. maybe a subdivision of the classifieds we already have.

Cowman: That is exactly what I thought, classifieds here at YT and really no one tells you what you have to charge. I cant see the special sud-division for the free items, just makes it that much easier for the greed guys to find them.

If there should be a sub-division of adds in classifieds at YT it should be a divission of paid for and free adds. In case you haven't noticed, paid for adds take priority on first pages over non paid for adds. While this practice may be fair to the sellers, it makes it very difficult for the guy looking for a particular item. A quick look through the current days adds each day may not reveal to you everything current that is there. I had some suspicions about a year ago on this, so decided best way to find out was try a few for sale adds. I basically never bother checking the classified adds anymore as time does not permit, to sift through what's new or two days old. In some respects I guess they are giving the seller a poor deal as well.

Cowman, It is indeed amazing how the internet has enhanced networking for both selling and buying those hard to find parts. The obvious items have always been somewhat easy to find, but other parts have been, until the internet, a real adventure. I posted a query for the auxillary fuel tank and complete shutter linkage assembly for an "A", and had numerous responses within a day or so. I'm sure that those items are the sort that he who has them may sit on them for years, and he who wants them may spend the same length of time looking for them without the internet. My suggestion to Lewis is to scan the classifieds, and odds are that someone is looking for what he has to sell. I personally, don't particularly like the idea of advertising parts for free, as all parts have some value, so why make it easy for greedy shisters to "take them off someone's hands" only to sell them on E.Bay. Giving someone who truly needs a part is fine, but advertising free parts brings the "Greedys" out of the woodwork.

I don't know paul but a lot of the parts I sell on Ebay the postage amounts to as much or more that the item brought. I would loose money on free parts obtained that way.

Hey Cowman, They have to keep Jarrets #88 car running and painted brown somehow. I'm sure it takes a lot of shipping costs to do that. We all contribute whether we like #88 or not. Seriously, I see what you're saying. Thats why the notion of "free parts" sort of rings hollow since in many instances, shipping costs can sometimes exceed the value of the part but obviously not in all cases, because I know there are a lot of people who buy on E.Bay and turn around and sell the same item on E.Bay. They just pick their spots.

I put a lot of stuff on ebay that starts at $1 Seldom does an item not sell. just make sure you figure your postage so you don't loose money. The dollar pays for the ad.

Great idea: In fact I was able to get a ford manual from somone on the ford board that posted it as "first response gets it free" type of thing and I recently saw someone else post an item the same way. In fact(will sneak this in) I still have a belt pulley that I am trying to find out what it is for and free for postage.

I think its a very g@@d idea, as long as they don't take advantage of your kindness, for their profit. There should be more people like you, in this world. Now, if you had a couple of fenders for an H, I would be more than glad to pay the shipping. People around here, won't let them go for no less than three hundred and I gave a pair of fenders away for an Oliver 88. You can guess what he did with them. $$$$

Lewis, No crazy insult from here! I think what you are proposing is admirable. If you would post again in the classifieds section of this site along with your email address, phone number, and address, I for one would bookmark your name and address for future calls. You could add in your next post just a sampling of the parts you have to pass on for just the shipping costs. I think we all realize that there are a lot of pieces/parts out there that are no longer made. Some will argue that if it's free it must be junk. You will have to decide what is usable and what is not. Good luck reducing your inventory.

Lewis, I think that it could work, I gave away a scuffler that was bound for the scrap yard and for all I would have gotten for it someone in Michigan has it on their tractor using it. At scrap metal prices I might have gotten $1-2 for it while its worth hundreds to someone else. There's probably lots of guys would give away items that are no longer useful to them..... Greed wears two masks. One could indeed be the person who expects an exceedingly high price for something, and the other is the person who expects something for nothing. Market (supply and demand) usually dictates the price of an item. YOu may feel cheated because you agreed to sell an item for $5.00, while someone else was asking $35.00. The point is that you sold your item, while the other guy still had his on the shelf, unsold. Value is what someone is willing to pay, as well as what someone asks. Isn't capitalism great?
