I don't wish to make trouble, but someone on the green board says that the IH "M" was "the worse tractor they ever owned" from my experiance farmalls in general were pretty good tractors

John Deere probably didn't have any 300,000 unit plus tractors but they did have their share of 250,000 unit plus tractors. I rather doubt those buyers were wrong either.

Mike: I rather doubt the owners of 300,000 new Farmall M's back then were wrong. There were only a handful of tractors topped those numbers. Without doing an actual count, I think you can count them on your fingers of one hand. Anyone who would make such a comment about any of the 300,000+ production unit tractors, is only letting the rest of the world know how big an IDIOT he really is.

The farmall H and M were the tractors that revolutionized America. They went faster than any other tractor, and four cylender.

John Deere never knew how to make a real 4 or 6 cylinder. They were behind time when everyone else came out with 6 cylinders, and they were still piddling with the loud sounding 2 cylinders. Look at it today, i don't know why people pay 10's of thousands of dollars for them?

Because they are purttttt ty!!! When deere had the same power as the 4's and sixes why would they want to just add more parts and wear and tear. If Deere could have cooled the Two cylinders properly as they added Horses they would have kept using the two cylinder Idea!

That isn't completly true. The JDs had bigger engines, but the Farmalls had more power.

I drove many different brands/models when I was growing up on the farm. If we didn't own a particular model, odds were that a neighbor did. The *one* tractor I remember as being hard to drive was the JD model G. Without power steering, I just remember being totally beat after steering that beast all day long.

As others here have said, no tractor was perfect. JD was guilty of being a bit overpriced, if anything. To each, their own. I won't turn anyone down if they wish to give me a classic tractor, no matter what the make . :)

Farmed in the 50 and 60's and then didn't farm till the 80 and 90s with classic tractors and farm equipment. There were no user friendly tractors untill the mid 60's If you guys are going to argue about efficient and user friendly tractors from that era then you all have no memories !!!!

I think the 4010's, and 3010's, etc., from 1961 and up were pretty user-friendly!

Hi, I hope he was comparing M to JD R. In 50's we had both JD 420U and SC. There wasn't much difference except SC with NFE was far superior for cultivating and mowing hay. The SC had a beter speed range in its 4 speed transmission. JD had 3pt. hitch which was a plus. When we traded SC for 300U in 58, the 300U was far superior to JD as it had IPTO, 5 speed with TA and more HP but had an addiction to gasoline.

Only green left is forage harvester, blower, and running gear.

HA thats why they sold so many M's. All those guys buying them. Then wishing JD had any thing to compete with it.
In its day the M was the big daddy of big daddys.
Some day I am going to get one of those green toys for the wife. She needs some new lawn ornaments.
Cant put a M on the lawn they still need to work.

Mike I will not argue that one is better than the other I grew up on Red tractors, in GM cars and Trucks. I still have red tractors and GM cars and trucks, not that they are bear but that is what I like. I also love to hear the old two cyl J D's run. I Dad had a cousin who had two J D 's and two Orange tractors, then two green, one ford, and a M he told Dad once the M would pull circles around both John Deere's They now have all John Deere.

Here we go again on the Red versus Green war. You know you can always tell a John Deere enthusiasts, but you can't tell them much. LOL In all reality, I am a Red fan myself nothing against the Green fans or there tractors. Personally, on the older green tractors, I think the hand clutch was a pain in the rear, and John Deere hung on to that early 1900's 2 cylinder technology a little to long. However, they probably were good tractors and my reasons for not liking them are probably poor ones. If I like appels and not oranges, and you like oranges and not apples, I am probably not going to change your mind and you are probably not going to change mine. Bottom line is, if he didn't like the M for whatever reasons, well I guess he is entitled to that, but no need to compare apples to oranges. I think a little stubbornism comes with being a tractor enthusiast, but no need in getting into a hair pulling fight over it. I have a Green buddy, and we always give each other a little freindly flack. We learned pretty fast not to take things very seriously. We would of probably killed each other by now if we had. No need to take things past the level of fun. The main thing is, just keep on tractoring.

I guess any tractor can be the worst one ever owned if the tractor maintenance and repairs are kept up with. In this case I would consider the source and not loose any sleep over it.

Why worry about what someone on the "Green" board says? I have an M and an MD and others and show, farm, and pull alongside of lots of green tractors. And that's just what I enjoy. We rib each other about colors, but basically we're all tracror nuts.

Just had to put my two cents in, red or green most of us are looking at this from the wrong perspective, comparing it to what came later.
Try looking at what was available before that model. Case in point, My father bought a Ford 2N in the early 50s and farmed for years with it. When he talks about baling hay with it with a IH 45 baler, I find amazing that its even possible. When I mention this to him he points out that prior to that little Ford they used a team of horses. No pto etc, hmmm I guess that tractor is starting to look pretty good.
