SH D-21 spark plugs

I have seen several instances under this discussion board where it was recommended that Champion D-21 spark plugs should be used in lieu of D-18Y to help with a cold blooded starting/running problem. When I purchased D-21 plugs I was told that the D-21's were a colder plug than the D-18Y. Was he correct in telling me that? Does everyone agree that D-21's will help when starting my Super H when it is below freezing?

The higher the number the hotter the plug with Champions. Doesn't really have much to do with initial starting. It does have everything to do with keeping 1) a cold blooded engine running and 2) keeping a "oil user" engine running. If the plug is too cold it will not burn off the incoming fuel and will foul. I ran a John Deere B across Iowa on a tractor ride a few years ago. In the mornings it would pop and bang and eventually die. In the afternoon when the temp was warmer it would run. After three days of nonsense I finally put the right plug in and it ran like a champ - it was a hotter plug. A couple of years ago my 706 gas basically ate up its oil rings. Tremendous oil consumption. Couldn't keep any plug from fouling. Finally put the Champion 21's in and it would keep going. Looked like a diesel but it did the job I needed it to do until I had time to overhaul it. It seriously could drink a couple of quarts in an hour. The intent with plug heat ranges is to keep the plug tip from eroding while keeping the gas igniting. So, probably the coldest plug for the job which will not foul is what you want. If it fouls .... use a hotter plug. Why not just put hot plugs in anyway? A hotter plug will erode away faster because the tip stays hotter. So, it is sort of like trying to have the longest plug life while not causing fouling problems. I think there is more to it when people say they have Champion plug problems. I do know of more people who bad mouth Champions more than any other plug. But there are those who get along just fine.

Ed: You sure stirred up a hornets nest here. I don't remember exactly what is in my tractors for plugs. I do know they are Champions, and I do know none of them are in the 20s. Now, its -25 C or -12 F here this morning. I guarentee I can go to my unheated shop and have them all going while Mike Solden is lacing up his boots. I am however not going to do that as the steel is more willing than the flesh. The steel is only 40-50 years old the flesh is 62.

I have Champion D-17's in my H and have never had a problem yet - 92 hours since I put them in after overhaul. Of course maybe in a fresh engine they won't present a problem, along with the fact that I never start it unless it is going to be fully warmed up and under somewhat of a load...

Won't run Champs in my vehicles though - nothing but Motorcraft or Bosch platinums...

Throw those Champion plugs a far as you can and get some Autolite 3117's....Cmore

I don't totally agree with Randy, but the only thing a Champion plug will fire well in is a Dodge. Use the Autolite 3116, or the A-C C-86 or C-87. By the way, the "Y" in D18Y means extended tip (A-C equiv. is C85S), supposed to help with fouling problems, and the UD16, the "U" means auxillary gap.

Klf, I agree, Champions work in Dodges...they are no good in anything else, Randy is right when it comes to tractors, I messed with one of my H's when I got it, played with the carb, timing ,everything and the new D21's I put in it were the problem all along, after changing them the tractor was fine. I work in a service shop and if you want to hear someone mean mouth Champion plugs , just mention them to my boss, he goes hostile...we use AC, Autolite, Motorcraft(in Fords) and there isn't a Champion plug on the premises. He has been at it for over 30 years and has no use for Champions..... ..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Mike: Well there is no fool like an old fool. I don't know as you have read my other post on this thread, but I had to go to shop, this morning for another matter. Tried 130, about 3rd turn of starter going, Same with Super A, but ice from condensation either in carb or governor and SA wanted to head for 2000+ rpm, so I had to stand there with grip on linkage between carb and governor to keep revs down, thus I couldn't get to 140. My fingers are still numb, man that fan can blow cold air on a morning like this morning. I suspect it was some ice in carb, as soon as I added a bit of Methyl Hydrate she tamed right down. The 140 did then fire up just as quick as other two. So you would have had time to lace your boots. My problems however were not Champion plugs.

do yourself a big favor and throw those champion sparkplugs away and buy autolite 3116 plugs. if champions were free and autolites were $5 apiece i would still buy the autolites. i use a dozen or so m's and 450's on our place so i have a lot of 'sparkplug' experience.

The best spark plug I have found for a Farmall 4 cyl is a Champion platinum truck plug #4130. I get them at autozone, It has a longer electrode, and is closer to the center of the compression chamber. If you seen these plugs you would see what I mean,, Get a set!!! You will not be disapointed. ChadS

Red ED back in the 60's I was told the D18Y was a fix all plug for all IH tractors. I had good luck in the 6 cylinders but could not get the 4 cylinders ti even stat on the D18Y much run good on them always used the ud16 for the 4 cylinders.

Whoever sold you those plugs doesn't understand heat range charts!! For Champion higher numbers = hotter. I believe the same applies with AC, Autolite, etc.

A hotter plug will not directly improve cold weather starting. However a hotter plug is less likely to foul - especially under light load and when running poor fuel. And having the plugs free of any fouling greatly improves cold starting performance.

Note: I switched from D-17 to D-21 in both my SH and SM. Have not had any plug-related problems since making the switch - 6 or 7 years now...
