Heys guys I was wondering if anybody out there has heard the same rumor I have. Somebody was telling me that Chevy is already talking about getting rid of the Duramax diesel and going to something different. I heard maybe a CAT diesel in their 3/4 and 1 ton trucks????? Something about the Cats are already in the larger trucks.

It would be get if anybody else know anything about this.....or maybe the guy I talked to is just hoping Chevy would do this. Would think of getting rid of the Super Duty if this has any truth.

Thanks guys

I haven't heard anything about it. the duramax diesel gmc's and chevs are nice trucks. Have you ever seen a dura pull the sled at a tractor pull?
I have seen a couple pull and i was immpressed with the performance they gave. One had a cube on the back for plumbin stuff and the other one was just a company truck, both were 4X4, stock.
They out pulled the cummins and powerstrokes by a long shot.

Chad, My little Bro is a service mgr. at a Chevy truck dealership that sell lotsa trucks...he says he hasn't heard anything about it, and that for the most part the Duramx engines have been trouble free.
Speaking from the driving experience (we have a GMC Kodiak with Cat power for our big truck, a GMC 4500 with a 21' roll back, and Duramax, a GMC 3500 with Duramax that we pull a 14000 lb goose neck with, and an F350 Powerstroke) the Duramax is "the man"! I am not saying this as a GM fan, cause I am not real brand conscious, but that engine is GREAT. It's quiet, it ACCELERATES NOW like a gas engine even loaded and going up a hill. It acts more like a gas engine accelerating.
The Powerstroke does seem to get a little better mileage under load, but that nay not be fair because it's a standard and the Duramax's are both backed by the auto tran. But when the Ford is hooked to the goose with a load, and ya start up the hills loaded on a highway, ya just pull in behind the tractor trailers...with the Duramax ya hit the passing lane! Again, I like all brands so not trying to start a war here. As far as Dodge, I really have no experience with the Cummins in trucks (I sell Case Industrial, and ya can't beat 'em in Hoes, Dozers and skids) but a parts house dealer that we do business with opened his parts book to show me something when we were shaopping the last truck: Tie rod end for a new GM:about 7 or 8 bucks, Ford: about 11 bucks...Dodge: about 28 bucks...then he priced brake parts!!!! We bought the GMC! Pete

Thanks Pete, it is somebody just starting rumors more than likely.

I know the Duramax is a good engine but it is something about having a Cat, plus I am sure that a Cat will out "lug" a Duramax and a Powerstroke- V8's need rpm's. I like the simple straight six diesel to bad Cummins is in a Dodge.

Thanks again.

I would like to see it happen. I kind of fell in love with the cat diesel when I was driving over the road several years ago. The cat would run circles around the cummins with the same horsepower rating.

Rusty: Not so much the hp but rather torque at low rpm, Cat will out do them all in that dept. I remember the Cat manual saying don't make a habit of it but also don't be afraid to lug them to 800 or 1000 rpm. I hauled logs on ice-hard packed snow roads 1989 Western Star with 3306 Cat set at 300 hp. On many ocasion I found myself on hills that if you shifted gears you would spin out. What a great feeling to watch thet tach drop to 1000 and yes even 800 and then recover again even before you reached the crest of the hill. Interestingly enough on many of those hills if you spun out you could not hold it and down the hill you went backwards.

I remember early one morning 3 of us each loading our trucks 12 miles in the bush. Nothing but 12 miles of single lane hard packed snow ahead of us, temp was rising quite fast, We had been having sub zero weather. Suddenly as we finished loading it started raining, what seemed like a warm rain. It started building on the ground in the form of ice, just like flooding a rink. We agreed to all head out spaced far enough apart so if anyone came down a hill backwards no one would be in his way, but yet close enough we maintained radio contact. We were one happy bunch to see the main highway. One of my co-workers said, thank god for Catapillar.

I heard lots of rumors about Cat and Chevy before the Duramax, but that's the first I've heard since. I'd like to see it, but I'm sold on the Dodge/Cummins combo. I've got a 90 1-ton with over 500k on it. Still going....

Ok yeah that would be a "good" or it could be bad trucks are already expensive enough Cat is the most expensive diesel out there, not to mention how long it would take for testing development and working out all the bugs. The dodge is the way to go its already proved itself and I know of a guys getting three hundred thousand miles out of them, check out turbodiesel registry.com you'll be impressed.

It's hard to beat a Cummins! My 5.9 runs real good. Should see how the 8.9 runs in the Fire Engine I used to drive!
