I have never seen a Farmall with shutters. Some have the open and close lever. Are they only cosmetic or can they serve a purpose ?
What tractors use them?

In cotton country most shutters were taken off after about 1950 when fuel distribitors went to so called "hot fuel". Most tractors were driven by hired hand drivers and they often forgot to open shutters causing tractors to run hot. A set for a M in like new condition hung in my Dads shed for years. I looked for them few years ago and they had disappeared probaly sold for scrap metal.

Yes, it was standard on distillate and kerosene burners and optional on others. Kero and distillate burners had to be started and pre-run on gas to warm engine up because these fuels could not be burned in cold engine. Then you switched over to the other fuel. Shutters were nescisary for faster warm ups and to maintain the engine heat. Most kerosene and distillate burners have just been run on straight gas for 30+ years. Most tractors that had shutters have somehow over the years had them taken off only leaving rimnets off control lever and so on. I think the shutters were bad about getting banged up and rusted up and so forth to where they wouldn't work. Rather than being fixed, they were taken off and discarded. They were visible on the unstyled because of lack of grill, but on the styled, the controll parts is really the only thing visible.

Fellas, the shutters were for more than a quick warm up, distilate tractors had to run hotter and the shutters were closed off until you ran in the high end of "RUN" on your guage. The distilate tractors also had a shield that fit over the manifold and a damper in the manifold so the fuel was vapour by the time it was going to the cylinders. Shutters are not a bad idea for cold weather either. I have an H and an M with shutters in good working condition, both were distilate tractors. Mike in Exeter Ontario

Like Dave says shutters were provided standard on distallate tractors to permit faster warmup. Shutters were an optional accessory on gas burners.

Shutters are nice if you operate lighly loaded in cold weather. Even with a working thermostat these motors will not warm up sufficiently unless airflow thru the radiator is partially blocked off.

Anyone have pics of shutters on a C or anything, my C was distillate, and it had no shutters.

The shutters came with distillate engines and were needed for fast warmups. Other tractors such as my Super C came with them as an option.

I have shutters on a 1949 Farmall C I bought this Fall. Funny that it is a Gasoline tractor. No Distillate manifold or Distillate carburetor either.
