difference between mta and 400?

I have what I think may be a 400 no sheetmetal,no tag,basically just a rear end and front ,no engine.How could I tell, with all of these parts missing,what it is.Thankyou for your help

Well, if you are sure it's a 400, not a 300, you can tell the year by casting date codes. They will look like 3*16*C. Which would translate to March 16, 1957. A is 55, Z would be 1954. The asterisk in the date would appear like a slotted screw

The rear frame deck lid of the 400 will have four threaded 5/8" holes at the left rear corner. The rock shaft for the fast hitch attaches there. There will also be two openings for the gear shift lever and one will be covered with a plate. The three holes for the base of the steering shaft upright are missing. The deck is several inches wider on the 400.

Having said all that, I put a 400 lid on a SMTA so that a fast hitch would fit using IH parts. Nobody has ever made a comment about it.

the steering shaft goes thru a hole in the top tank of the radiator on a 400. I don't know about the mta, I think the MTA radiator is like a M radiator if I am not mistaken.

I was talking about the frame lid and "steering shaft upright" connection. Holes in the radiator are a different matter.
