The 706 is not close to a 806 by any means!! I remember when we had both and was pulling a 16' and 12' krause oneways hooked together with the 806 and we decided one day to put the 706 on in place of the 806. the 806 had been pullling the oneways in Hi 2nd with the TA back and if I remember correctly it was 5&7/8 MPH it was doing a good job and pulling it easily but leavin a good trail of smoke behind it. We put the 706 on the onewys and pulled them in Hi 1st with the TA back and it WOULD NOT pull it worth a darn never would rap up over about 2000 RPM and finally we put it in L 3rd with the TA foreward. It was OVER A GEAR SMALLER THAN THE 806. Later that fall we got another 806. The 706 was always A BIG DISAPOINTMENT AFTER THAT!!
Rememberd the 806's would dyno around 97 and the 706 about 75. BIG BIG DIFFERENCE

Seems like you were expecting the 706 to do what the 806 could. You were right, 706 is 75 hp, 806 is 95. 706 was not supposed to be able to equal the 806. Just because the 706 can't pull what an 806 can doesn't make it a bad tractoror any less of a tractor than a 806. 20 HP difference is alot, espically when the 806 has more weight. If they wanted the 706 to be able to pull what an 806 could they would have called it an 806.

The early 706 had the D282 same as 560 only turned up. the later 706 had the German D310 both good eng. but the 310 was better in my opinion. The D282 will have glow plugs the D310 won't. I have a 706,756, both D310 and a 460 with a D236 same eng as D282 with a longer stroke. The 310 will start much easer.

Yes the 310 is the better engine. And yes the 282 is hard to start even in warm conditions and can have head gskt. problems.
