Farmall 300 Question

I just purchased a 300 rowcrop. This is the first in the number series I have owned. My question is: on the right side of the hood cowl near the three hydraulic levers are three L-shaped levers that look like petcocks. I took the side of the hood off and see that these run to the hydraulic valve. What do these levers/rods do? Do they lock out unused valve sections to prevent deadheading hydraulic oil?

Brian: Donnie and Bill are right, one item they didn't mention is even with a double action cylinder you can switch to single action, thus achiving a float position.

I agree with Donnie. The indicator should point to either "S" for single-action cylinder, or "D" for double action.

The "indicator" is nothing more than a roll pin which sticks through the index bushing. The index bushing is what the wrench grabs to change the valve action.

Here is a picture of the rods I am talking about. I don't see any indicators, rolled pins, or index bushings.

I just do not know what they do. They were froze up. I got them free now.

Brian, these are interesting pictures! I have never seen this sort of thing before, but I'm not around 300's that much, either. They appear to attach to the tops of the valves, and they are for switching from double to single action. This is a nice feature because to switch the valves on my 400 requires hood removal. As to what mode the valves are in based on the handles, they should be in double-action mode with the rods pushed in. To be sure, there should still be an "S" and a "D" stamped into the top of each valve. Look for this under all that grime.

My 400 valves looked the same way (filthy). I took them out, cleaned them and replaced all the gaskets and o-rings. Cost was 30 dollars.

Does anybody think these are factory? Sure looks like some farmer was tired of taking off & reinstalling hoods when he wanted to change cylinder action. Good for him - fairly neat workmanship I think. Too many of us would just leave the tin of and laying in the corner of the shed. My nickel. Dick Davis

If it is what im thinking, it is to make the hydralics oneway or twoway. Hope this helps. On the 350's they come up through the hood piece, on the 300 I believe the are under the hood.
