I usually don't watch the evening news, but tonight I did. I saw what seem to me, to be a new interest in Space on the part of President Bush. I was just wondering if he and Paul Martin may have had just a bit more than their share of Tequila in Monteray, Mexico. Just thought may be Paul may have gotten into a few verses of an old East Coast Canadian song, chorus goes like this," The Man in the moon is a Newfie and he's sailing on to glory away in his golden dory." Under the right conditions, Bush may have though," My gosh these Canadians are out in front on Space travel.

Looking at those Mars pictures and that vehicle, and the soil. If they could develop atmosphere by introducing plant and animal life. It would be a good spot for a couple of senior citizens to retire with their Farmall A and Super A. The soil doesn't look too bad, don't know whether I could hack the rocks, but there is definately no weeds. Pollution is not likely too bad. Better save and take the bottle of Screech. At our age we should offer our services and years of growing things to mankind. Can't you see the headlines now Farmalls on two planets.

I balked at the cost to haul my uncle's Oliver row crop from Michigan to Florida - I wonder what NASA will charge to haul my Super A to Mars?

Hugh, We think space exploration takes the "Right stuff". Obviously we have never been in a dory off Grand Banks in an Atlantic Noreaster. That takes men with the "Right stuff", and yes, maybe a little screech to boot. By golly, I do believe that if we loaded the tires we could get enough traction out of our respective "A" and super "A" to get farming started on Mars. We wouldnt have to use roundup, or roundup ready seed since there are no weeds there (yet), besides, doesn't "Earth day" only apply to Earth? As to all the rocks, we had an 80 a few miles west of here that seemed to have at least as many rocks as what I've seen from the Martian pictures. Don't you think that the ground there resembles some of the tobacco ground here? I'm seeing more possibilities all the time. Geesh, to think that last year I thought farming in Brazil was a good idea. Anyway, Hugh, the missus says its ok for me to go to Mars as long as I'm home for supper.

Paul: I had forgotten and omited the first line of that chorus," Now you may think this is goofy, but the man in the moon" and so on. Yes I agree very much so, that Martian soil does resemble tobacco soil. Pioneers always made good money.

If you look at this realistically, the very least they could do with Mars is find a place for Toronto's garbage. That alone would create atmosphere. Really all that is needed there is enough animal life giving off carbon dioxide and a balance of plant life giving off oxygen. As long as we don't take SUV's those will grow on each other. You just think about this, it could happen in ten years. By then we will be into our seventies, our wives wont care if we get home in time for supper by then. The very last time I saw land grants was the opening up of the Peace River country in Northern Alberta. I was 20 years old and just out of ag college. I hesitated that time, right or wrong I don't know. Just think how pure that place must be, and no we will not take Toronto's garbage.

Farmalls on Mars..... Hmmmmm mmm..... .Of course. They had it planned that way all along. Mars isn't called the "Red" planet for nothing. Taking some of Toronto's garbage there may not be all bad....It would jump start the greenhouse effect. After that, They'll have to haul it to Michigan once again. Come to thinnk about it, all the things people carp about as being bad for earth's environment would come in mighty handy on Mars, from a melting glacier or so to even the methane gas from cattle flatulence.

Paul: I don't see the hoards joining in on this discussion, kind of makes you realize how Columbus must have felt some 500 years ago. Come on guys where is your imagination. NASA probably knows a lot more about what their doing than Columbus did 500 years ago. Lets face it the very first guys needed there will be farmers and miners. There is no fur trade, no hostile natives, no rattle snakes, etc. Where are all you want to be farmers that craped on my generation for making agriculture and farming so capital intensive you cant get in. Here is your chance of a lifetime, homesteading on granted land. Just may be the next big opertunity.

Hugh, I just realized that we have something going for us that Columbus didn't. All we have to do is lay claim to as much ground on Mars as we can and then immediately put it in the Government soil bank and let it lay fallow for 15 years, collect our money, and by that time, we'll be able to move the whole operation there. WE can only hope it takes that long for the government to realize that they can tax our donkeys off.

Van, Isn't that just what a lot of people seem to think we need? Expect the Govt to take care of everything, and what do youb get? Government buearucrats. I was thinking of not even telling the Govt, but looking up Andy Griffith and see if he can still make one of those homemade backyard space ships to get our Farmalls up there. I'm sure tha Hugh would agree that by the time we petitioned our respective governments, that they would require too many time consuming hearings and by that time the Ruskies would be there with their Belarus beating us to the punch. Gosh, I hope Belarus are still red..... ...Or is it Belaruses
