I am thinking about maybe making a trade. I posted a photo ad and was wondering If its a good idea or am I just being dumb. I offered to trade my 400 with the loader for a 706 or a 806 with out a loader. I want a bigger rig for baling and just because I want a bigger rig.
I have pretty much run out of money or id just buy a 706 and have both.
Am I thinking ok or just being stupid again?

Kelly, As others have said and i echo those again ....Keep the 400 w/ loader. Use it and the 300 this summer. Since the 300 doesn't have a loader sell it. (I know the H now belongs to your son, now) I don't know how far you are currently traveling away from the house, but the 400 w/ loader will fit on your trailer! Handle a swather, rake, baler, & you can also move those big round bales too. Little to no road time on the tires.
The swather, rake, baler can all be jockeyed between fields by your pickup. Especially on fields that are over 5 miles away. A time saving factor when you get busier than a one-legged man at a butt kicking.
The 706/806 are significantly larger than the 400. They are great tractors, maybe just not right now!
Also consider putting atleast 3 rear wts/ side to have enough counter wt to handle round bales.
Hope these thoughts help!
Later,
John A.

Wow, that was a lot of advise, and everyone said keep the 400. I agree. I just bought a 300 utility with a loader, and the pistons leak, but it works. I bought a f20n this week. Good thing I dont live in the midwest where everybody has a big pole barn and tractors are cheap. I would have several acres of tractors.

Keep your 400 you might need to rake and bale at same time. Do get a Diesel 706, 282 is alright but Ger 310 is better.

Hi Kelly, I noticed that you don't have wheel weights. If the baler is large or heavy would wheel weights work better for you? I would hate for you to sell this nice 400 with that loader. You are going to miss it. Don't do it!

Wait until you have the money for a 706 or 806, or buy one that needs the kind of work you can do for little money and bring it up to good shape.

kelly, you know I like you and am just giving "fatherly" advice but you are being stupid again. just hang on to that good 400. It is only a matter of time til all those guys wanting a SMTA find out about the 400. It is a good investment.

I would never say trading tractors is dumb, but once you've had a loader, you can't live without one.

SGT K, I couldn't agree with you more, I have a Case 300 and a B250 , both with loaders...I always thought I would take the loaders off and have a straight tractor but each has a job around the farm and if anyone has any bit of land , you are always digging out a thorn tree, moving some gravel or loading up something. I couldn't be without either, especially when the son in law alaways has one at his place. Kelly needs to hang on to that tractor and add to his collection, that 400 will rake and bale a heck of a pile of hay..... Mike in Exeter Ontario

Kelly, Half the fun of these old tractors besides working on them is the saddle time. This hay bussiness is a little sideline for you if Im not mistaken, so bottom line is a little more saddle time on the 400. Thats a good thing! How much faster do you really want to make bales? If you really think you need a 706, just do it but dont sell the 400. I really cant say too much, I shhhh,
just bought another tractor myself, its red but its a Massey Ferguson, I cant say that too loud here. That brings my fleet to three, so I guess the pot cant call the kettle black!!!

Ahh so what you are saying is I am being dumb.
I must have thought so too or I wouldn't have asked. Dang I really like those 706's though.
Just once I would like to be able to practice some self control with this tractor stuff.
but NO!!! Every couple of months I get a wild hair up me butt and I just have to have somethin.

Keep the 400 for a year. See how the haying bussiness goes. Get some money again, and fix up the 300. Then next fall keep the best (most useful and reliable) 1 of the 3 that you have, sell the other two and get a bigger tractor.

If the 400 runs okay, keep it and wait for a latter generation tractor like a 674 comes along. A bird in the bush...
