Adding a water pump to a Super A?

I was using my Super A today for plowing snow and as it warmed up I started opening the throttle and applying more load. After maybe half an hours running I was a bit over half throttle when I noticed considerable quantities of steam coming from under the rad cap (it's a little loose). Taking the load off and running it at idle solved the problem enough to finish another 5 minutes or so of plowing but there was still a small amount escaping. I have had the radiator recored recently and the new core has much smaller tubes (although twice as many). It was about 0 degrees celsius here today so I'm thinking I ought to add a water pump. If I do this, where can I get the parts from in Canada? Also I'll need a thermostat (do I also need a new upper water hose connection to mount the thermostat in?), pump, and belt. Should I also install a temp. gauge at the same time? Is there anything else I need to think about or know to do this? Thanks, SAm in NS

Have you ever had the head off or know that the head has ever been off? From first hand experience, I replaced a head gasket and noticed that the water jacket holes were smaller than the original. This caused the Super A to overheat. I went back to the supplier and found that there are two different head gaskets available for C-113 motors. One with small water jacket holes for motors with water pumps and one with large water jacket holes for motors without water pumps. I replaced the gasket again with the larger holes and that was the cure.

That tractor shuldn't get hot pushing snow no matter how hard you push it. It isn't loaded steady and hard like it would be if it was doing field work and even then the ambient temp would have to be a LOT warmer than O c. to get it hot.
Something must be restricting the coolant flow or else the air flow through the radiator is restricted by junk in the fins.

When they did the radiator did they for get the overflow tube. As the water warms up it expands. If you had the level too high and the overflow tube is plugged or left out there is no room for the expansion. AS for a water pump just get one for a SC and longer belt dont need nothing else. Better check for the tube that runs down the carb side from the tank area check to see that it is not plugged.

I know the overflow tube you mean and it seems to be fine. I've had antifreeze come out of that before when the level was too high and stuff came out of it today so I don't think that's my problem. Surely if I add the water pump I will need the thermostat as well so that the engine will actually warm up? Thanks, SAm in NS

SAM if you get a upperhousing for a thermostat you will find that the hole in the housing where the hose fits is larger than the outlet on the radiator so you will have to do some stretching of the hose or make some type of collar on the radiator to compensate for the different sizes. If i were to do this i would find a thermostat that would fit original housing. As HUGH said this is a warm weather job when you dont need the tractor for a while.

What is the difference in size? Also what temperature setting of thermostat would I need? If I stick with the old upper outlet and find a thermostat to fit is there any way I can add a temp. gauge? (I'm sort of presuming that putting a hole in the hose and mounting the sensor in there a lousy idea) If I do this I'd like to do it all at once or it may never get done, also if I drain the rad I may as well do it all at once. I'd also like to do this now as I don't relish the thought of plowing snow in first gear at idle all winter. Thanks, SAm in NS

Sam: I would go with gene's idea on pump and belt only. If you feel after that, you need a thermostat or temp gauge, very easy to add later. My 130 has been acting like it's not warming up enough these last few cold days. Not sure whether its thermostat or just carb. I put a plastic fertilizer bag over grill today and it worked perfect. I can slide bag so its a partial cover if weather warms up. We old guys call those jobs like thermostat, temp gauge, etc. warm weather jobs.
