To Ed, ACES, rebuilder, 42FarmallHI discovered the source of my excessive end play. On the right side, which needed the seal changed badly, I found my outer bearing was loose in my bull pinion assembly and on the shaft. Not bad, but enough for this farm boy to know it just wasn't right. For better or for worse, I peened the housing to hold the outer race and the shaft to hold the inner race, then lock-tighted them. Now the brake drum holds the inner race tight, and the outer race holds the shaft tight in the housing. I think this is exactly what you were telling me, but I just couldn't grasp the idea until I had it in my hands. Now, the question is, will it hold? I found a used bull pinion housing I could have purchased, but I feel pretty good because the assembly went together pretty tight. If it fails I bet I can fix it in a lot less time, thanks to your advice on how to get it apart. Besides, I'm having such a good time! Following your advice I went ahaid and took the left side out too. This went much easier because the axle slid out and I did not have to remove the entire axle housing. The left side wasn't as bad, but it needed a little attention too. Also, I lef the shims alone. If I would have removed shims after I tightened up my bull pinion housings I would never have known what affect I was having. Now I have two brake shafts with only bearing end play, and new seals, however; if the rear end locks up on my maiden voyage down the lane, please excuse me if I don't post this fact. I'm sorry if my post is a little long-winded, but I am very grateful for the advice I received. SGT K
