I have a 1956 400 Farmall. It stuck in 4th gear on me and not sure where to start looking for the problem. Cannot shift into any other gear but 4th. Push clutch in and the tractor stops like it should but cannot shift gears.
Any suggestions?

This has happened to me on a Super MTA, our 504 and 460. I have never taken the time to dress up the shift lever. I try to prevent it by being more careful while shifting. When you are about to shift and the tractor and gearshift feel as if they are on a bind, don't force it! Pull back on the TA and the tractor should "free-up." It is then safe to shift.

I just got on the "NET" to ask the same question about my 300. I assume the fix is the same. Was pushing snow and was going from reverse to a forward gear and now the tractor appears to be in 2 gears at once. However, when you put it in nuteral it only stuck in 5th gear. Did manage to get it back in the shed and will work on it tomorrow. If the fix is different than the 400, I would appreciate information on how to fix.
Thanks

Same fix! Untold numbers of us have all had it happen to us usually at the worse times. For me it was also while moving snow on the coldest day of the year with an 80" bucket of snow full up and nowhere to move.

Remove the soft plug from one side of the casting at the bottom of the gear shift. There is a pin that goes through the shifter that has to be punched out of the casting so you can lift the shifter up out of the casting. Once it is out, use a light to look down into hole and you'll see the shifting rails. Using a long heavy duty screw driver align all the rails so the large notch in each rail is lined up even and in the center of the hole. Now look at the very bottom of the gear shift shaft. You'll see how worn and rounded off it is. You can build it back up with weld and then dress it up on the grinder to prevent this from happening again. If you are unsure of how much add to it or grind off, take it to your Case/NH dealer shop and have them correct it. Put the shifter back into the slot, push the pin back in and then install the soft plugs on both sides of the casting to hold the pin in.
