Super M rad removal

Hi: My neighbour (oldtimer) has the head off his Super M and before he puts it back on he wants to fix a leak in his rad. He says it looks like the whole bottom plate under the front of the engine needs to come off as there is no access to the rad bolts. Are there any shortcuts or tricks to this operation or is this a big job? Thanks for any help.

North of Fargo, I just dropped the wide front end with the big steel plate on my 1944 M. It's not too big a deal. Used a jack stand under it and unbolted and let her down. I bolted a six inch angle iron 3 feet tall and six inch wide to the side rails, one each side to hold the tractor up while I removed front end. Worked like a charm. I added live power, rebuilt water pump and cleaned radiator and installed new drain pipe. This front end has been on about 60 years. Good Luck with yours and be careful, they are a little heavy.

North of Fargo, eh?

My bet is that you have a wide front, with adjustable wheelbase on it. That would be that big plate with the only hole for the radiator drain. My guess is solely based on your location - we have a lot more wide fronts up here than narrow.

Anyways, I just went through this last summer on my M. Yea, it's a pain. You have to drop the front end and that plate. Lots of cribbing, chaining, tieing, etc.

When I put it back together, I did the unthinkable. I left the castle nuts off of the radiator and just left studs. Those hoses and top brace keep her plenty rigid. I was going to put them back on, but they were a PITA. An old IH mechawrench said he never put them back on. He retired last year and had worked on these from the day they came out.

Yeah you got that eh right. Thanks alot for the info. I'll let him know and he can decide how bad he wants to fix that leak (he won't be using it that many more years). Leaving those nuts off sounds like a plan.

If the mud shield is still on the tractor it has to come off. it is only a tin plate. Then there is room to reach up from the bottom and get at the bolts. You will cus some because there is not much room and there are studs threaded into the radiator with fine thread castle nuts and a cotter key. if they have gotten rusty they are a real bear. 5/8 wrench.
