> >Hi, I recently purchased an M tractor. >It has no dents and the hood paint is all good. >It has faded to a pink, other than red. >Still a great tractor. Has a lot of power and starts >no matter how cold. >The question that I have is this: >I have a oil dip stick and I have been told that an M has >only the two spigots on the pan and not a dip stick. >If this is true, I have a super M. or Do I? >The Date on the right side Says 5 of 1947. > >I have been told that the motor has been changed >when a loader was used with it. All of the rest of the >tractor smells of an" M". Please help to clear my clouded mind. It has a Hydraulic pump on right side mounted to the motor. Two lines connect to the lower side of tractor. Thanks in advance. Don

Oliver: I guess it is safe to say all M, SM and SMTA had the petcocks from the factory. There is no question many of those tractors had the boss and were probably drilled.

Remember also that in the late 50s and 60s these tractors were still relatively new. If anyone had the misfortune of breaking a block, the tractor would have been quite worthy of a new block. A new block in that era would have been the same block as 400 or 450. No question it would have had a dip stick.

I broke the block in my 560 diesel in 1978. That would have been 6 years after the 282 diesel was put in any new farm tractors. A new short block was still available from IH at that point. Remember, when these tractors were still in the hands of original owners and less than 15 years old, there was not very large inventory in scrapyards. You had to go new. That was the case with my 560 at 17 years old. A used block could not be found anywhere.

Curious as to what the dipstick is like. My Super MD-TA has a monster cap of a dipstick; kind of ackward to get it out.

I assume you mean that the dipstick is located in the engine block? The reason I ask is because there was a company that manufactured an after market dip stick which actually replaced the top spigot in the oil pan. My 1940 M has one.

You probaly have U6 combine or stationary engine they would bolt into M. If it is U6 it will have boss for fuel pump covered with metal plate. New replacement blocks fron IH also sometimes had dipstick. The engine mounted pump with 2 lines from bottom of tractor sounds like tractor has been converted to live hydraulics and old belly pump is being used for resorvoir. This is from memory so anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

An M can have a dipstick! There was a provision on the block for it,but never drilled at the factory!I have one that was drilled out about 1965 and a dipstick added at the IH dealer near where I live.the old guy who worked in the shop said they use to do it all the time around here.It has the two petcocks as well.

My 1956 300 with a dipstick and my 1955 300 has petcocks. Neither 300 has been modified. Possible production break? My SMTA also has petcocks.

It would be easy to replace the block with that from a Super M/400/450 and have the dipstick. As said, check casting codes on the whole tractor, disk brakes are a giveaway for Super M, also 4th gear in a Super M is about 6.5 mph while only 4.5 to 5 in an M...

Some of the last Ms had disc brakes. SMs had the 2 petcocks as well. My SMTA also has the petcocks. I have heard of the add-on dipsticks but never have seen an M or SM with them. As a kid we had a H that was converted to live hyd for loader use and the hose went into the liftall in the belly as described. Been awhile as this was back in the 50s so things are a little fuzzy.

I have seen a "Super M" as you describe -- not true. Check other casting codes (the letter X, 1952, or above, will indicate it is a Super M, although there were some M's made in 1952 also, and look at the chassis serial number on the left side of the clutch housing. The prefix FBK means M, SM means Super M. It is next to impossible (not to mention expensive) to upgrade an M to a Super M, there are just too many differences than a simple engine change.

I thought super M's didn't have dipsticks?

Look at the serial number and look that up online to know for sure the model and date.

The boss the dipstick tube was pressed into was on the M & SM blocks, they just didn't drill & bore the hole. I've seen M's with dipsticks.

I will also check serial #s as suggested.
There are also #s located on the left side. I will check these. Will these be the Motor # or the Tractor #?
My thoughts are that the whole tractor is "M" but maybe? the motor only has been changed. I also looked at the Dip stick area and It looks like a factory dip stick and opening.
