What year or years did IH use German diesel engines in their tractors? are they better powerplants than the gas engines? or more trouble?
what models were they used in? did IH use diesels
from more than one source? if more than one source how can you tell the difference?

Started in 67 through 83.706,756,826,886,86,686,3088,3288, also used in some combines 715,1420 that I can think of.Noted to be good engines.

Mark, as for the years I think the 706 was one of the first with the German diesel and that was the later ones so sometime in the mid 60's the first 706's had the 282d (same as 560) with the glow pug set up. As far as a better powerplant than gas that depends on your use for the tractor (for example) if you pull it hard a gas will use a lot more fuel, if you start it in cold weather just for chores it might be better to have a gas. As for more trouble the german diesels are probably some of the most trouble free of any. On the models someone else will be more qualified than me but I know the 706,and 806 had them. Almost all of IH motors are their own the only exception that comes to mind is the 350d which used a contenental I think, one thing to keep in mind is that IH was and is a international company and the german diesels were IH just built in a Germany plant but they are a IH motor. Hope that answers most of your questions Brian.

Just to set the record strait, the 706 was built with the German Diesel or the American made D282, and the 806 used the American made moter (don't know the exact modle) only. Adam R

I allways thought the 806 was a US engine. It seemed like the 706 changed engines every other day.
