We found out this past Monday, that a close friend, Dan Lempka, was killed in a roll-over accident near Tecumseh, NE. He was 48 years young. The best guess anyone has as to how it happened is: He had a bale on the 3pt spear, and was taking it out to his sheep. As he was going down an incline, he apparently looked back to check the bale when he drove over the edge of a brush pile, rolling the tractor. He only had this tractor about 3-4 weeks (560-D). Dan had been on the farm all his life. His 2 sons are both grown and away from home (one is in the Air Force). Friends & neighbors are currently taking care of his livestock until things can be sorted out. Dan was the type of guy who would give you the shirt off his back with out a second thought. He will be GREATLY missed. His funeral will be 23 Jan 04 @ 10:30 AM - St. Andrews Catholic Church in Tecumseh.

Its always sad to hear about stories like this. It sounds like the neighbors are being neighbors.

When you live in the high rise jungle, your neighbor can die, and you probably didn't even know him.

I see this same thing starting to happen in the rural area where I grew up. Neighbors aren't dependent on neighbors like they used to be. I guess they aren't depending on neighbors help at harvest time like it used to be.

Anyone who grew up on a farm, has ties to a farm and tractors will have a chord struck in thier heart when someone loses their life in a tractor mishap. I guess its a "one of us" feeling we have when we hear of these things, a farmer doing his chores, caring for his animals, Dachshund, I'm sorry about your friend..... .Mike in Exeter Ontario
