I have just bought a 424 International, late '66 vintage. The carb has a solinoid looking piece mounted in the front of it.It only has one wire comming out of it. Could this be some kind of heater, or is it somthing else?

Gregg, I had the same thing on my 424, I eventually replaced the shutoff with a new one, Haas is correct in the purpose for it. Two things that made my 424 run and idle better were: 1. adding electronic ignition 2. fixing a small leak in the gas line from the tank to the fuel pump, right under a support strap---that was a tough leak to find!

That is a solenoid valve that shuts off fuel to the main jet whenever the ignition is turned off. It is to keep the engine from "dieseling" after it is turned off when the engine is hot. If the wire is not connected to anything, then the guts must have been taken out of the solenoid, or the tractor would not run, as the solenoid must have current to it to open to let the gas flow.
