I don't want to start another long discussion about the pros and cons of reversing a ring gear, but if I decide to try it, what's the technique to remove it without damage so that it can be reinstalled? The tractor is a 200 (C123 engine).

RT: In removing a ring gear you are going to reuse, never get it red hot anywhere. As mentioned on many posts you can heat them in the oven for installation. All you need do is uniformly go around the ring with your torch, keeping the direct flame away from the actual flywheel as much as possible. You don't need to get the ring very warm until it will come loose. You can then just pull it off with a pair of welding gloves on turn it and put it right back save on the second heating. I find it very convenient to have a second person on hand. One guy can do the torch work, while the other guy is ready to remove ring. Torch guy can then quickly brush any crud from flywheel or ring. Then quickly back on, and torch guy can imediately return to torch just in case you lost too much from cooling. Before starting clean any rust or dirt away from portion of flywheel ring has to slip over.

I've had good luck with a hammer and brass bar. Don't drive it too far on any one side, work your way around it gradually.

To reinstall take a welding torch and heat about 1/3 of the ring gear red hot and put it back on (make sure you have it turned around plus rotated 45 to 90 degrees). It should have expanded enough to slide right on. This should give you a as good as new ring gear.
