Timing an H

This is the first time I'm timing my '47 H. I don't know if it was originally mag but it's got a battery/distributor ignition on it now. It's running fairly lean now (after carb rebuild) so I checked it first without moving anything. I hooked up a static timing light - one lead to the distributor (wire that runs to coil) the other to a good ground. I rotated the engine until I could feel compression on cylinder 1 (cylinder closest to the fan), then rotated the engine until the light came on. This was at about 30 degrees before the first timing mark.

I've been able to run lean with this timing and gotten good power. However, since I've never set the timing and having just rebuilt the carb, I figured I'd do everything.

So I tried changing the timing so the static light (same as getting the spark with the coil secondary wire) would come on at the static timing mark - just after the TDC mark. When I started the engine with this timing I got a faster slow idle but it ran rough at 80 percent throttle and I got some flames coming out the exhaust. I've since brought the distributor back to the original position as that will at least keep me going but I was wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if the distributor could've been oriented incorrectly on installation. I also checked the timing with a dynamic timing light and got a surprisingly steady showing of the timing mark in about the same 30 degrees BTDC position. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave -- Do you have Fire-Crater Pistons? If so, the Case-IH Service Manual GSS-1356 lists ignition timing spark advance with a C-152 Engine as: 0 degrees at 400 RPM and 22 degrees BTDC at High Idle Speed (1815 RPM). The GSS-1356 Manual also lists for this set up: Distributor Symbol "A S", Distributor Part Number 364 653 R91 and Governor Spring Package 362 725 R91. Hope this helps.

If I'm reading this right your problem is running lean correct??? I so your timing change will not do any thing for that, you need to adjust the carb to fix a lean running problem. By the way my book says 30btdc is right

I misspoke - by 'running lean' I meant 'running about as lean as I'd like it' as opposed to the 'running rich' I was experiencing before. If 30 degrees btdc is correct, then what are the notches doing in the other direction? I'm just trying to determine my timing is correct by whatever measurements are appropriate.

Hook the timing light up to #1 spark plug wire, rhen recheck the timing, it sounds like the mechanical advance may be sticking in to advance postion as well, it is located under the points. On the dyno,, about 28 deg makes the best power without the poping and carring on, and will have a little slower idle, it needs to sound like it is under a load just a bit,, not much,,, just enough to hear a change in the rpm when you advance the timing. Hope this helps, Chad
