How do you guys put on a new rubber gear shift knob. Is the gear shift tapered, and you just pound them on? Do you put any epoxy or glue on also? And something else, I know they did it at the factory, but I just can't bring myself to paint it red. I guess I'm not a true "restorer" after all.

If you put a little heat on it with a heat gun or propane torch it will go on very easy with a rubber hammer. But clean the shifter good.

Sarge;

Not all Farmall's had rubber shift knobs. My M has a steel knob threaded to the shifter. It is painted.

I have a 46 A, built about the middle of the year and it has a cast gear shift knob that screws on. I sprayed it with black Plasticote and it looks really good, feels SOLID!

Sarge;

Please don't chastise me too much, but I don't have the serial# or year memorized like most in this forum. I have & use a Farmall H/M/SM/806/and two 856's on 600 acres. The H/M & 806 have never been over hauled so I have not had to worry about keeping that information handy. I do know that the knob has a farmall number stamped in it and it is the only one left on my farmalls now that I think on it. The others have long been busted. Many wonder why I don't rebuild these farmalls but I just prefer to see them out there working vs. being kept under a sheet. Plus I don't have to worry about scratching my paint!

Just put the knob in a pan with water and bring to a boil. Knob will slid right on will be tight when it cools.

USe a little spray soap for lube... that will dry later. Petroleum lubes can stay slick for along time, and your know can slip right off.

Squirt a little WD-40 or similar and just push it on, you may need to twist it a little as you push. I think they look much better if left black. I don't think they were painted at the factory, could be wrong.

I agree they look better black. The old color photo's show the new tractors with the knobs painted red, and I can still see some red paint on mine. But they might not have all been that way.

This is on a 48 H I've been working on. The tin is pretty good and all the casting numbers are right, I even collected up all of the right bolts with the dimple on the head. So when I started I had the intentions of doing a complete restoration. I did some research, Guy Faye's book is good, lotsa pictures.

But now I think I'll leave the M&W friction throttle on and I can't bring myself to paint my new wiring harness either. So much for discipline!
