200 cranks slowly

I have a Farmall 200 that cranks slowly, like a one or two revolutions then have to release lever and try again. I have found that if I turn the ignition off it will crank fast and steadily, as soon as pull back on the ignition switch it will slow down again. I have replaced the cables, had the starter checked out and the contact switch on top the starter seems to make good contact. This used to be a great starting tractor and is very handy with its fast hitch so I'd like to be able to depend on it. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate the help.

Ted, I remembered a similar discussion a few days back so I went back and found what may very well describe your problem. It was posted Jan 22nd under "Hard starting Super A". Hugh MacKay responded to that thread as did Bob M. according to Bob, who many here regard as the electrical wizard said in that thread that a bad coil will produce the problem that you are experiencing. The difference being that your starter seems to turn over normally until you turn the switch on and then it bogs down. My guess is that if you have good points and condensor, and if your coil is indeed good that you have either a weak battery or something down the line draining current that otherwise would go to the starter. If you have another tractor with the same voltage system, ie 6volt or 12 volt, you may try swithing coils and see if the problem goes away. It only takes a minute or so, and it will pinpoint or eliminate the coil as the culprit. YOu might try going back or in the archives and see if you can find that thread to see if your problem is the same. Right now its on page 6

Ted: Another problem I have run into with these tractors as the get older, is ground strap running to the sheel metai on dash and battery box is just not good enough anymore. I use a longer ground strap and go right to cast for my ground. As others have said even new cables, if they are not large enough will not cut it. 1 gauge all the way with soldered on ends. I find the best source for these is heavy truck repair shops. that is what they are using on those big diesels with 12 volt.

On the issue of timing or ignition, I put a new set of points in my 130 the other day. Timing was so far off, after the change, that when you accelerated tractor quickly, flame came 12" out of the stack. It was doing this on all cylinders. Moved the timing a bit and this stopped right away. My point is it never affected the starter cranking ability. Coil could be your problem, but I think not on timing advance. I have even seen these tractors start with number 2 and 3 plug wires crossed, they don't run very well but I have seen them fire up.

The poser to me is why it cranks slowly with the ignition switch turned on. Proportionally, the ignition circuit should not be using that much of your battery reserves.

What does your timing look like? The only thing I can imagine is that the engine fires too much before top dead center - and this might be trying to force the piston down too soon.

Ted: How heavy are those new cables?

In most cases what I have found is bad battery cables. If you're still 6v start by getting fatter cables. I have good luck with 1/0 or 2/0 welding cable. With 6v even if the cables are new if the're not fat like your finger they may not work. Cables like you use on your car are not fat enough for 6v. I've also had bad ground at the starter itself right where the case bolts to tractor

I'm not familiar with this model but it sounds like whatever is connected to this switch (coil?) is causing the problem. Good luck. Dave.

Ted

Have you rechecked your ground going to the tractor.

I had a VAI case one time that did the same thing and I found I did not have a good /heavy enough ground. When I cleaned and hooked the ground cable to a good place on the frame the trouble went away. Just a thought.
