I am looking at a Super M, the one I posted about earlier, and I figured 1000 would be a reasonable price. I was told 995, and then 750 because water poured into the radiator goes straight to the oil pan. What may need repair with something like this? Is it worth 750 with a water leak (only problem)? What would a total overhaul cost? Just sleeves? What could be likely problems? What would be a reasonable offer? Thanks for your help.

I suggest you stop adding water. It should clear up the problem of water getting into your oil right away.

You can also have problems with engine bearings
if it's had coolant especially antifreeze in the oil for any length of time.

You will never know until you open it up. Could be a cracked head, could be a head gasket, could be a sleeve, etc. If the tires and tin are any good, I can't see where $750 is a bad price. I have agood block for $200 if you need one. I also have sleeves if you need them. A head gasket doesn't cost that much. I say go for it if that is what you want. It is only money.

Hey Jed. Thanks for the post. If my girlfriend saw your "It's only money" she would slap me, because I say it all the time, especially when the oil pan in my truck went out (400 bucks because the 4WD had to be removed on the 94 F150 to access oil pan, and I was either going to pay 300 for them to pull the engine or 300 in labor to remove the 4WD) or when the steering bushing went out and sent my truck off the road, causing 599.45 in suspension and frame damage. I pinch pennies for gas, but i still say "It's only money." Like going out to eat and movie this afternoon: it's only money. Just kidding, I need some fun too. If it is one sleeve that is bad, would I only need to replace that one? I'm beginning to lean towards a really bad sleeve. What would you set for a price for a sleeve? I am going to offer less and perhaps bargain a little, I just do not want a unrepairable tractor. I would think about a replacement block, but I don't quite know. I'd do everything in my power to keep the original block in the tractor, so if that wouldn't be able to work I don't think I'd even buy it. However, it is my tractor's twin, so I may see what I can do with it and then pass it down the line. Thanks again.

it's junk tim. look at the condition of the externals, tires etc. and buy it accordingly.

The engine block may be cracked meaning BIG $$$ to repair or replace.
Go very cautiously on this one; it may best be thought of as a parts donor.

Tim, Start at $400 it is easier to go up! Remind the seller that you are looking at the very least doing the Top end on the motor! (head gasket), while the head is off might as well get it serviced.
There is no way in H_ _ _ I would start off at $750 with what you have described about the motor. If it needs tires too I would drop to $300. But it is your money, give it away if you want to. If he gets insulted, get him to counter offer. That is why it is called barganing. Who knows.....with all that is wrong with it, in your eyes you may get it for $600 to $750 maybe.
Good Luck horse trading,
John A.

Yeah John when I first eyeballed the tractor seriously as a potential buyer I always price the tractor in my head. 1000 was exactly my bid the way it sits now, before I knew about the engine. When I was quoted 995, I was grinning from ear to ear beacuse that was what I figured, but after the engine (they forgot what the problems were with it) and they went down to 750, I began to think that I may be able to offer a much lower price. If it was mechanically okay and needed a couple cosmetics (wiring, missing one front rim and tire but wheel is there, battery box bit rusted) I was going to say 1000. I have one more person to talk to who's advice I treasure more than anyone else's, and then I will make my final. I will be sure to let everyone know on this forum any progress on it. Thanks for the post.

Dont know if the super M was wet sleeve or dry. But like F-20 said if wet sleeved and the seals are out would cause it. You didnt say how fast it went into the oil. Could be blown head/head gasket-Badly cracked block . I'd pull the plugs and see if one or more cyl. are full of water if it goes down rather slow. I just sleeved /new pistons and rings for about 175 bucks ><.but cost 260 to get the head all guided valved -planed and magnafluxed. Plus bearings and gaskets so to do it right could cost you a few !! John
