DId these tractors have any known problems with the transmission? every one I have worked on or seen at the salvage yards have worn input shaft bearings and bull pinion bearings on both H and M tractors, have also seen the bull pinion bearing bad on a farmall 450 (I Think it was) I rerember also someone talking on the old RP forum that they had an M that had a transmision rebuild three times

In addition to the lack-of-maintenance situation, lots of them have been tinkered with to produce 1/3 or more additional power through overbore kits and high compression pistons. When the farmer got that much more power, he usually put it to work, and that meant pulling bigger loads than the engineers planned on. I've got a '49M that had the rear end completely rebuilt several years ago using 560 bearings everywhere they would fit. It withstood many years of hard use after that.

If they had a problem it was usually caused by a lack of maintenance. I can't count the number I have seen with half water in the rear end. Also it seems like people just didn't check the oil level very often. With todays gear oils those gears ought to last another 50 years.

I think that the pinion bearing was a weak design. The bearing runs directly on the gear without an outer race. When it goes bad it takes the shaft and the gear with it. Why the bull pinion bearings go bad is not so obvious. All three of these bearings had failed on my H. Still, not too bad for a 60 year old machine in regular use.

if they had problems there would not be such a large percentage of most of a million tractors still working 50 years later. what do you think?

Rick: After 50 years I guess likely you could ask that question on most 2, 3 or 4 plow tractors.
