On a Farmall M, somebody reversed the polarity when they insalled an 8v battery (It is still a 6v system). The positive terminal is grounded. The negative goes to the starter. I don't understand why it works and I need to replace the battery with a regular 6v. But do I connect the new one the same way?

Thanks for your help,
Andrew

Hey thanks for the info guys... I'm actually replacing the battery because the generator is only putting out 3 volts. I'm going to have it rebuilt soon. I hope they polarize it correctly!

They polarize it or you polarize it?? Whoever installs the generator or the regulator does the polarizing. It's done AFTER everything is installed and the wires are hooked up and ready to run BUT BEFORE the tractor is started.

Well after I get it back from the rebuilder and it's all wired and hooked up, how do I polarize it?

With a short jumper wire, 'wipe' the "BAT" terminal to the "GEN" terminal on the voltage regulator. All you want to do is create a momentary spark when the two terminals are shorted together. I usually use an insulated 10 or 12 gauge wire for this. Insulated, only because most of the time there is close quarters between the teminals and bulkheads or sheet metal and it is mounted in a hard to see area. There are quite a few other posts about polarizing and how to do it, that may have explained the how and why better than I. Sorry for the late response, been getting a neighbors tractor running and relocating snow today. Good Luck

I wouldnt replace the battery just yet.Is your gauge an ampmeter or a voltmeter. My M only puts out about 3 or 4 amps after a few minutes of running. You cna turn up the generatopr to put out enough to keep an 8 volt battery charged.

The gauge is a factory ampmeter. It works fine. When the thing is really going it spits out 20 or so amps... volts as I said though are only at 3.

That's good to know about the generator though. Maybe when they rebuild it I can tell them to juice it up a little more, to keep up with 8v. I hope that doesn't burnup the coil though. I will probably still have to replace the battery. I was stupid one day and accidently left the switch on for a couple days. Then, with this subzero weather... well, let's just say I'm not holding out much hope.

It came from the factory as positive ground -- all IH and many other 6 volt systems were this way. It doesn't make any difference which cable is grounded as long as the generator was first polarized correctly. If you don't polarize and hook it up backwards it fries the voltage regulator and it won't charge.

Your tractor SHOULD be positive ground. If you turn it around, it will be backward. Then the generator won't charge and the ammeter will read backward. Nothing else in the system cares which way it is connected.

My cub was reversed and it still worked. I tried my lights and got smoke. switched the battery around, got a new fuse, and lights and cub ran better
