Just installed a live pump on my 1944 M. Anyone know what size hyd tank I should use. Got a 53 Super M with the tank under the gas tank I really don't know what size that is either. Thanks for any guidance in this direction. Warmed up to 10 above here today in Sheffield, Vt. Downright Balmy. Thanks Again.

The size of your tank depends on what you're going to use it for. With a two-way cylinder, you can estimate capacity simply by the volume that the rod displaces (Surface area of cross section of the rod times length of cylinder) inside the cylinder when it's fully retracted. Multiply that by the number of cylinders you plan to use, and that will be the absolute minimum size of a tank that you should use.

One other note: I've replaced engines on tractors like this because the cam shaft timing gear isn't the same as those from the tractors that were built for the live hyd. pumps. When the pump was really loaded up, it shattered the weakest link: the timing gear. That ended up cracking the block, etc. Big mess. So keep that in mind. Make sure you havel a good relief valve in your system to minimize the risk of this happening to you.

Sorry my post is so long. Lots to say!

Sorry to disagree but the two-way returns the oil on the backside of the cylinder so volume is not a big deal. Your explanation is perfect for the old one-way cylinders.

I have owned a couple of them that used the old belly pump for the tank. A hole is drilled and tapped into the bottom front, for a 3/4 pump feed line. You can use one of the side lines for your return connection. The guts are removed from the old belly pump as well. You pull the old pump drive shaft and put a plug in the hole. Works great.

Fred, Thanks for the quick comeback. My M also has a lift-all with resevoir. I've seen tractors plumbed the way you described but I have this notion to keep the old lift-all working and get an extra tank for the live power. The system you described does work great. Thanks again.

You can use your belly pump resivoir for the belly pump as well as the live hyd with no problem. Drill the bottom plug to accept a 3/4" pipe for the suction to the live pump. Install a tee in the dipstick tube for the return line. This way you can use both hydraulic systems with only one tank.

Thanks all for the great info. I realize the cam gear may not be heavy duty but it's for light use,(no loader) and I'll install a relief valve. Great pictures of the homemade hyd tank.I didn't realize I could run both hyd systems from the belly resevoir. I also have the extra small tank on this old tractor and will keep it for emergency gas. I think maybe using the lift-all tank or a cute little tank bolted on about 8 to 10 gals ought to do it. Thanks again for all the help. Dick in Vermont.
