I recently purchased a Schauer battery charger from a local parts store, accually two of them!I thought the first one was bad so I exchanged it for another on.The problem was/is that on high charge the needle jumps up and down constantly and doesnt charge the battery, but on trickle it does fine and charges the battery like overnite.I know the battery is good and I have a good clean connection.I have seen the Schauer name on some of the chargers in the hospital my wife works in and thought "if its good enough for a hospital life support machine or some thing,it should be a good charger" but am finding out different.Anybody have any experience with these!

What do you mean by "jumps around"?

Could it be that you have an "automatic" charger?

I have a 15 amp charger of this brand and when it is on the 15 amp setting and the battery is nearly fully charged, it accomplishes the automatic feature by turning off and back on every so often until the battery is fully charged.

That wouldn`t be what you are seeing, is it?

It does say automatic on the box,BUT I connected it to a battery that was run down.I mean way down.like it wouldnt even turn the engine over and as soon as I filpped the switch to CHARGE/START the needle went up and then came back down like very 4 or 5 seconds. It did that all day Wed but the battery never charged up.I put it in TRICKLE last night and now the battery is charged.

Golly, this sounds like the charger was telling you that the battery was charged up. That`s the way my charger works, cycles every few seconds, but, it is a voltage thing, it goes on high charge for a few seconds and when the voltage comes up, it shuts off. It cycles like that but maintains the battery fully charged. Sounds like your charger is not working correctly, or, the battery is sulfated meaning it didn`t take much charge to get it`s voltage up even though the battery wasn`t really "Charged". It is possible a long trickle charge broke down that sulfated condition and actually charged the battery. Would be interesting for you if you put this charger on a known good battery, see if it cycles, then turn the lights on and observe the charger. That should provide you with a clue.

You didn't describe what features your charger has.. Do you mean that it does not charge when set to "Boost"..?? Boost is a joke on MOST chargers, and will only burn it out... If it has a 2-Amp, and a 15-Amp charge position, I would guess you have a bad circuit...Probably a bad main Diode.... In my old big charger, I replaced them with 200-Amp Diodes... they have held up WELL..!!

There are only toe setting,CHARGE/BOOST and TRICKLE.It will charge on trickle if I leave it on overnite. But on the CHARGE/BOOST setting the gauge jumps up and down.I have an email to the tech support of the comaspny that built it but I have doughts they will return it.Lady at Lowes screwed me out of being able t oget my money back on it so I guess Ill end up buying 50 bucks worth of merchadise at Lowes and buying me a charger elsewhere.
