It seems that we have larger and larger local Goverments, while getting poor quality service and higher taxes. This is happening in my area, I'm sure that this is happening in your area as well. What happened to the old days when we had a Mayor/Reeve, a couple of Councillors, an old Road Superintendent? These old boys knew how to get things done in a timely and cost efficient manner. Taxes were low, we didn’t have half an army on the payroll, roads were graded (decently) , good rec. facilities and such. Everybody here now has a title and it takes 3 guys to ride around in a pickup to make sure that the roads are still flat.

These “old boys” only get the recognition long after there out of office. Does anyone have an old “favourite” Mayor, that “got things done”?

you're preaching to the choir here.i work for my local municipality and the amount of waste and crookedness i see on a weekly basis would have heads rolling at any production facillity i've worked at.over-staffing, unlimited unnecessary overtime for the old boys network, farming out maintenance that could be done in house-well,you get the picture.

It seems to me that greed and arrogance breeds politicians. In my area every year or so some Dumb*** in the local government says "Hey would everybody like to have a nice big new Library or skateboard park" and the citizens are stupid enough to think that it will be free. And it gets voted it. Two years ago a big library was built and it looks like a palace. The only way to get good politicians it seems is to watch them like a hawk, dont allow new projects that eat tax dollars and dont allow them to build new firestations, librarys, bikepaths, and to only allow them to be voted in one time.

I think that All elected politicions can serve no more than 8 years at the maximum.

Kurt, "8 YEARS"? Do you have any idea how much damage a politician can do in 8 years? Its not the length of time, but what they do in the time they have that counts.

I think most politicians start out trying to do the right thing, the thing they said they would do. Somewhere in the system they relize that there is more profit in doing what is wanted by the money interests. They have to satisfy the reight people to get re elected. I think part of the cost in local government has come about through the courts. In the old days you could build a road and people drove on it. Now it has to be built just so or some guy will drive off of it and sue the county, state, city involved, and they will win. So we pay all that liability. People aren't supposed to have to think about what they do or take any responsibility for anything they do, there is always someone else to blame.

Hound, The "Good old politicians" discovered something a long time ago, and that was that we would believe them if they promised something, be it a new service or a new entitlement. We would listen to them and let ourselves believe that if we would just leave it to them, we wouldnt have to do things for ourselves. And the best part is that it is all free. Well, almost free , maybe just a simple 1% increase to our taxes. Folks, it doesnt take rocket science to realize that you only vote in a 1% increase once a year for just one new service or entitlement, for 30 years and you have more than a 30% increase in taxes. Not to mention the bureaucracies required to administer all this "Free service". We weren't even satisfied with all that, we also believed that that same "Good old politician" needed to do something about the "Other guy" by restricting and regulating him, thus creating even more beaucracy and more tax to enforce these regulations on "The other guy". We cheered when they told us that they would tax more heavily the rich than the rest of us, thus creating a tax system that costs all of us dearly just for the cost of compliance. We were even niave enough to believe that none of this would ever impact us out in the country. Not until we could no longer dig a ditch, spray our crops for pests and weeds, build a cattle barn, raise hogs, fill in low spots, drive our tractors, and equipment down some roads, allow our underage kids to hoe or worse drive a tractor. our 'Good old Politicians" are exactly what we made of them. Don't blame them, blame US.

Paul, I get what you are saying.... but. Tax increases -if we like them or not, get dumped on us regardless. It seemed in the past that we or them could justify it. We saw them spending money -paving roads, building up poor roads, drains, pipeline water, sewers, and such. If we really needed this stuff is a whole other issue.

My point is that we saw them "spending it". Now adays, we get these increases, and like you sad, 1% every year adds up, but we don't get any return on it, -we don't see them "spending it", except for those new trucks and all that fancy letterhead.

Hound, I think part of the problem is that the local, state, and federal jobs along with all the service jobs are the only jobs with a little security. Just look at manufacturing, I have been a toolmaker/modelmaker for 32 years and I am watching the jobs go to China in groves. I guess my point is that everyone wants a service job and a secure paycheck! But if thats the case, what does that do to our tax base? I guess you answered that allready! Im hoping for a few more years of employment, I have my fingers crossed!

I think that the vast majority of our LOCAL politicans are trying to do a impossible job with their hands tied behind their backs. Our local budgets are being eaten up by the human services (welfare). Locally, we had a 2 lane black top road re-surfaced 2 years ago. We got some state money to help do the job, the state inspectors left the contractor do a substandard job, the contractor declared bankruptcy, and now we have a 2 year old, rough road going to pieces. We also have a murder trial starting, have the DNA from the "poor innocent" scumbag, (from when he raped her, then murdered her). I din't want to know how much we are going to spend to protect this scumbag's rights. It doesn't seem he was too worried about the woman's rights when he was violating her.
