Cowman, I'm from Ohio, a darn good place to be from.
Now I live on the Texas Coast, Matagorda County, and it is primitive enough to be tourist free, mostly. We are in the depths of our winter here, started last night and is expected to end sometime tomorrow. Was down in the 50's today. BRRR.
My wife got a sunburn on her shoulders this last weekend, wearing a tank top giving the horses a bath. I got a little sweaty trying to get the ol' 414 to do some mowing. Grass, it grows here in January. In the summer, when you are cooking at 100+, we are just perking along at the mid 90's. This is just like heaven here, or close enough. Come on down and we'll work on the red tractors together. Really, I could use the help. Joe
P.S. We got cows here, too.

Cowman, I'm sure you're about as cold there in Nebraska as we are here in Michigan. The beauty of it is that we can well appreciate Spring, and Fall. I've lived in both Northern climates and Southern climates,(12 yrs in Fla), and there is indeed something to be said for the change of seasons. I would never go back to living year around in the south. Maybe visit there for a couple weeks, but thats it. I am itching to get out in the shop tho. I think I can see some insulation and a stove in the future.

Cowman: I know how you feel. Problem with most of those nice warm spots is loony people, plus it will just get so hot at other end, you will have to come back to NE for summer.

I always thought an aunt and uncle of my wife had the real life. Spent their working years in Syarcuse NY, raised a family. In retirement they bought a spot in rural Florida and already owned a spot in rural Prince Edward Island, Canada. They had a mobile in Florida and a rough 2x4 cottage in PEI. Every spring and fall they stopped by to annoy their kids in upstate NY. I thought what a perfect retirement, but that was a generation ago. Besides if one of us were to do that today we would need 3 sets of tractors. I have thought of buying a Super B train tractor trailer, living quarters on front trailer, tractors and car on back one. A guy could just migrate like the birds. Down side to that, it takes big bucks. (both ideas)

I notice one of the guys suggested a better pair of long johns. I know a guy who has a pair of heated socks, similar idea to electric blanket. Apparently it has batteries and a plug in charger for when watching TV or at the computer. If you could get the same system in long johns, might be a good item. However the battery size may make you a target for muggers thinking you had a big wallet full of cash.

I think the best idea for guys our age is learn to be fireside guys in winter.

Cowman, Big Bend --TEXAS. Rain is next to gold in being scarse. Can get cold some.....But it is damn well short lived compared to up north.
Was 65 degrees here today.. is 49 degrees @9:25 CDT, low in the morning will be high 30s. OBTW.. The tourist trade in the Big Bend area of Texas is moderate..... But it is all WIDE OPEN Thunder we got counties out there that are bigger than the states of NH and VR to name a couple.
( You New England area guys don't get your dander up, not trying to pick a fight, just show how big and open it is out here).
There are places , Like.. Alpine,Tx you are 250 to 300 miles from a large town. ie El Passo and Odessa.
Cowman, Lots of Farmalls in Texas , you know!!!!
Later,
John A.

Nebraska Cowman, Don't even think about Vermont. Been 35 to 40 degrees below zero last two weeks but today we got a decent 15 degrees above zero. We have three seasons here Last winter, this Winter, and Next winter. Missed Summer last year, I was in Connecticut both days. Hang in there another 3 or 4 months and it's next Winter already.

Hey Cowman, Not to get too personal here, but there may be a speedier, cheaper way out of this for you. How about a new pair of insulated underwear? I bet the pair you're wearing was a gift from the Johnson Administration. Check out SierraTradingPost.com. They have a great selection of new highspeed, lowdrag polypro snuggys. Our troops are wearing the same type stuff right now in the mountains of Afganistan. It's a thought. You can even get a pair in festive Carribean colors. Stay warm, remember, the cows are counting on you!

I could say any place but Nebraska, but Kansas isn't much better, only been down to 0 so far. Next summer when it is 95-105 you won't even remember it. Or, if you want NE to seem warm, you might try ND or MN for a couple of days.

GM NC, The best place to go without spending any money is to put a chair next to the woodstove, and open up 150 years of IH ! Just a thought.

Nebraska Cowman, scotty may be right.Or you could sell out and move south. It dont get too cold here in the south of NM. It has been down to about 20 but warms up to about 50 or better for daytime highs. And what do you consider old.
