Thanks Chuck K.

Advantages and disadvantages of both. I don't like batteries much so this is a plus for the mags. I like maintenance free simple things so this is a plus for the new electronic ignition that replaces the points and condensers.

A good firing mag is completely equal to distributor ignition if not better. The problem with these old mags is they get dirty, cruddy, filthy. Especially around the impulse coupling springs and dogs. I just finished a '40 H, started great on 12Volt, but I wanted 6V. Could not crank fast enough to make any spark on 6V. Took the mag apart, cleaned the impuse coupling and coupling dogs, put it back on and it starts with ease. Just bump the starter through the compression stroke and SNAP away it goes. It's so simple yet so complex. It's also amazing something like a impulse magneto, with what has to be exposed to extremely high stress loads during impulse, can hold up for 63 years and still work.

I like the mag.I have one on my F12 and all I have to do is very slowly turn the motor over 1/2 a turn and It will start no mater what the temp.

I'll take my mag any day - I don't need a battery to use my tractor! Just one less expense as far as restored tractors that are seldom used...

I've got a mag on my M and it throws fire no matter what, although both H's have battery ignition I like the mag ignition, if the engine turns over it will light it up.....Mike in Exeter Ontario

If they are both in good shape and make sufficient voltage to fire the spark plugs there should be no difference. Of course, if the battery voltage sags under the starter motor load to where there is insufficient voltage for ignition, then you have an ignition failure. That's why I like mags, they just fire and don't care what the battery voltage is. The other advantage of a mag is hotter spark at very high speeds because the primary voltage they generate continues to climb as speed increases, while a battery ignition system is limited to the voltage produced by the battery and generator charging it. That's why mags are sometimes used in racing engines, but you're never going to approach those speeds on a tractor engine. Brian
