Thinking about buying an old IH truck to haul my tractors (H or M) to local shows (50miles). What's a good model to buy? I was thinking something larger than a pickup, with a flatbed/stakebed.

i'm not sure how much you want spend or how much work you want to do? but the idea of useing old sheet metal on newer drive train is a killer idea
you know the nostalgic look with dependablity in mind. i'm taking 63 1600 coe loadstar and putting in a 7.3 diesel for dependability.while keeping the original appearance.i love the look of the old IH trucks and how tough they are!!! this is my two cents...max

First, I'd suggest you visit www.oldihc.org . Next, I'd recommend you check eBaymotors, under "Commercial Trucks" and "Other" categories, as well as "International Harvester" under the "passenger vehicle" category (don't know why it's there, but there's no listing under "Trucks". After the first time at eBaymotors, just go back daily, and under the categories, check out "new today" so you don't have to sort thru all the same stuff you looked at yesterday.

Right now, I have both a '51 L-112 and a '52 L-112 pickup. Being partial to the L-series ('50-'52), I'm considering the idea of a LC-160 thru 180 series, known as a 'snubnose' when I was a kid because of the semi-COE construction (not unlike the later BC-series, the forerunner of the Loadstar), while still retaining the L-series cab.

My idea, borrowed from the streetrod community, would be to set the sheetmetal over the running gear of a late-model ton cutaway van, and power it with an IH 345 or 392 and a 5-speed (once upon a time, there were a lot of potential donor schoolbuses out there for the engine and tranny). My fantasy would be to build an oversize "pickup" bed, and set the truck up with a hidden gooseneck/removable 5th wheel setup, as well as a class III/IV receiver hitch just for multipurpose flexibility.

But that's just my personal idea. My family's farm equipment repair business used a '44 K-5 16' flatbed with a GRD-214 flathead 6 as a tractor hauler, and I never particularly liked it...it'd run all day, but it was a slow trip when you came to a hill and you had 2 H's or M's on board...so I'd recommend later-model power, and probably later brakes to go with the power.

I have a 1948 KB-7 with a 14' flat bed w/hoist that I am working on. I have the motor finished and running like a top. The brakes are the big problem, new parts are just about unatainable.

I am sure that a 50 mile hike in this old girl would just about due this old man in. But she sure will turn some heads when we go by with a FARMALL up on the back. Finding a place to load and unload will also be a problem due to the height of the bed. The goose neck flat bed trailer w/ramps would be much easier to use.

I agree about the KB-8 or larger, a fine looking rig if you can find a low profile Hobbs trailer. A short wheelbase L series set up with a 5th wheel would get you down the road a tiny bit quicker, but never more than 55mph. You would need a lot travel time to get to Red Power Roundup! Speed limits in 1949 were 50 mph.

Red, In my opinion, nothing is any prettier than seeing an old K or KB model with a couple of letter series Farmalls loaded and tooling down the highway. A friend of mine bought a KB-8 that had been a fire truck last winter, but he paid dearly for it. The L or R series 180's also make a nice hauler, but arent as expensive as the K models. I've been rattling the idea in my head to find something like that and tow a goose neck for my tractors. I'm told that permanent antique vehicle licence tags are available in most states and are a lot cheaper than renewing tags on a newer model. At least they are here in Michigan.

If you don't mind having a truck newer than your tractors, a Loadstar 1600 or 1800 would be a good choice. With proper care, the 345 V8 is a strong engine and new enough to easily find parts for. My suggestion for this truck takes into consideration the fact that gasoline engine trucks don't seem to be as heavily regulated by the DOT as the diesels.

I second that motion. I worked for a man that had a mid 70's 1600 loadstar with under 16,000 actual. It is always shedded. I actually washed and waxed it for him. It looks SHARP!!!! It is candy apple red with a Parkhurst grain body with red sides, and white pinstripe. I drove and listened to clasic country radio on AM. It was a super truck. Cant hardly beat those IH trucks.

I'd look at used fire trucks. Generally low mileage & usually reasonably well taken care of. Wouldn't be too hard to remove the body and replace with a flatbed. We sold two in the late '90's, a '65 and a '68 V206's with 549 gas engines. Thirsty as all get-out, but you aren't going to put a lot of miles on it anyway. 35,000 GVW's so they would have needed a CDL to drive them, but would have made dandy tractor haulers. I wish I would have had the $$$ and a place to keep them, but I didn't so they went down the road.

I have always been rather fond of the old KB series, something like a KB7 or 8 would make a real nice tractor hauler. When I was a boy this was the truck of choice for the custom corn sheller guys because of the slow turning 6 cylinder engine. That engine would sit and shell corn all day long and be more than ready to come back and do the same thing tomorrow. They don't build them like that anymore.

The fire dept I run with has a 1949 KB 6 that they bought new. Has around 20,000 miles on it and runs like the day it was new. A few years back it was re-painted and lettered (gold leaf) and had some motor work done. It is not in service anymore but turns a lot of heads at parades. Very sharp truck. Only trouble we have with it is keeping the brakes working and I think that is from lack of regular use (only gets run about 6 times a year).
