How close to being the same tractor are the 544 and 574 ? I have a gas 574 but would think the diesel would be the stronger engine?

Wayne the only thing the same in them is the engine Gas or Diesel. I had a 544 Gas for a while all I will say mine was a lemon, I have a friend that had one for years and liked it his was a utility mine was a Farmall. The Diesel is the same engine as the Ger310 only it is 4 cyl.

Wayne: About the only item those two tractors have in common are the engines 239 cubic inch diesel or 200 cubic inch gas. The 574 is British built at Doncaster England with ab 8 and 4 transmission, 16 and 8 with TA, whereas the 544 is an American built Farmall with 5 and 1 transmission 10 and 2 with TA. The diesel engines are German built, Not sure on the gas, it will be an IH engine though.

Wayne;

No these tractors are quite a bit different! The 544 is closest to the 656. Many of the parts will cross over. 544's, like 656's could be gas/diesel gear drive or hydro row crop or utility(2544) Gas engine is C-263/291 and the diesel's are D-282.

574 tractors are in a sense the start of a newer utility line growing into the 84 then 85 series tractors.

not 100% sure with out checking my parts books, but i believe that most of those style of tractors basically had the same rearend & transmissions till the 84 series came out with t/a's but still had the same basic rearends, that said, the only real difference through out the years and models was the size/displacement of the engine, gas engine where usaully ihc motors and the diesels were neuss motor, i believe they were german motors. the diesels were a good motor though they could get rather expensive to repair if your need any major components, such as crankshaft or fuel injection pump.
