Cub Charging Problem!!!

I Bought a 1962 International Cub Lo-Boy Ser # 16152J which came with a dead 12 volt battery. I replaced the 12 volt battery with a new one with the battery negative ground and it starts and runs fine but the battery just keeps discharging and once shut off the Lo-Boy will not restart unless jump started. On further research I crossed referenced the starter ser# 1109611 as a 6 volt starter. I am now wondering if I should purchase a 6 volt battery and positive ground it and see if the generator will keep the 6 volt battery charged as I'm wondering if this system is still a 6 volt system. Any advice is greatly appreciated in advance and I'm wondering if I may have done damage using a 12 volt battery on what may be a 6 volt system.

Originally, the LoBoy's changed from 6 volts to 12 volts beginning with serial number 16398. The 1109611 is a 6 volt starter and just maybe that number is a replacement part. It looks as if that starter might be not original, but a repair part only. Not certain about that. Unless someone has changed some other parts of the charging system, your tractor is one of the last of the 6 volt models. Do the lights work?

Thanks for replying to my post. I have no lights and Ammeter appears to be stuck on a slightly charge condition. Please read my response to Dennis.

hey! get it started and with a multimeter set on a dc range touch the positive and negative of the battery and monitor the voltage, 12 volt system should put out up to 14.0 vdc, you may have to throttle up a little to see and increase on the meter , if it is a six volt system you may have cooked the regulator! good luck

Thanks for your response. I've fully recharged the battery to 12.5 volts and with engine running at any speed it still reads 12.5volts DC. After running the Tractor for about 2 hours when I read across the battery it reads 7.5 Volts and I can't restart with the battery unless jump started. Actually what I'm confused about is what at this point is keeping the Tractor running after being jump started, the battery or generator?? I also replaced the coil with a 12 volt coil with no internal resistor. Can I pull the battery leads off while the Tractor is running and read across them without damaging anything??

A working 12 Volt generator would give a reading of about 13.5 to 14.5 Volts across the battery with the engine running.

Your 12.5 Volt reading is just the battery voltage.
