Hello,

Been reading the posts here for the last few days and thought someone here might give me some insight.

I'm looking for a tractor but keep waffling on what model I need. I want the tractor for primarily mowing ditches and a couple acres of overgrown pasture. Of course I'll use it to blade the drive, winter and summer. I also could use it to move a few 1500-1800 lb round bales. Neighbor's probably getting tired of me always borrowing his 4020. Now the kicker I'd like to get a decent tractor with blade, bale fork and either mower or front end loader for under 5k. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for?

Been looking for a 560 or 706 gas but haven't found the right deal yet. Come close but learning not to snooze. Should I be looking smaller so I can get around yard? Don't want or probably need bigger, they get a bit cumbersome for my needs.

Thanks for your help.

if you can afford to stay patient the right opportunity will come along. i was finally able to buy my own farm a year ago and was very eager to get a tractor. i wanted 706 bad but wasn't haveing anyluck finding one in my price range. i came close to buying some junk a few times but a good neighbor kept stepping in and borrowing me his equipment(nice collection of farmalls and internationals by the way). and finally it happened! i found a 706 w/ a wide front, aftermarket 3 pt and a nice 2000 loader on it for under $5000(even talked the guy out of a year rounder cab and grapple!) it can happen, have patients!

Casey,

Patience is the one thing I can afford. I don't need to earn an income with this tractor so no need to rush, except for that snow drift in my yard. Oh well it gives something for my old Chevy pickup to plow into. What it sounds like is I need your negotiating skills.

Thanks

Well first off does it have to be red??? If not you might look at all the colors some can be had for less. But if red is your only way a 560 with wide front would probably do you ok its rated at around 63HP

No it doesn't have to be red. I'm just more familiar with some of the red ones. Spent my teen years driving a 1466 and a junker called a 2+2. I've spent a little time on various JD, IH, and MF tractors and guess would prefer one of these brands. Been looking at a few Olivers too but know exactly nothing about them. Did you have something in mind?

Well I know that tractors like the Allis brand are cheaper then most others, and also oliver seems to be a little cheaper also. The olivers are very good tractors, and depending on what HP you want or need some to them might work well for you. I guess what I'm saying is look around a lot before you buy one. Depending on where your at you should look for dealers and see what they have and maybe even test drive a few, that way you might get a feel for some and find some thing that feels right to you

Depends on how you think I guess I'm not 50 yet but very close. But I have lived by the hard knocks school of learning and have been paying for it

That's good advice....I thought I'd found the deal for me on a Farmall M until my Dad strongly urged me to drive it around the section. Not that I'm looking to spend 10 hrs a day on it...I'll just say I'm glad I didn't spend my teen years on that spring they call a seat.

Thanks

I guess why I told you those things is because I have 10 tractors and only at most 2 of a color so I have been on a few and still looking for more toys to play with

I appreciate you taking the time to help a first time tractor buyer. Do you have a favorite color? Doesn't sound like it but we are in the Farmall section.

Well no I don't, but the most used tractor I have is a Ford 801. It has a loader on it and does most of the work on the farm. It does have its limits, this time of year almost all the other tractor are put up for the winter but the ford still has to work. The biggest tractor I have right now is a Farmall 450, it will run the baler this summer. My Oliver 77 runs the mower conditioner and brush hog. My Allis W9 speed patrol is a road grader. And my 8N is set up as a back hoe tractor. The others are just toys/lite duty tractors. The Ford makes a good genarail duty tractor but doesn't have live PTO which makes it bad for a lot of things, but with the loader and wide front end it moves the hay and does the snow plowing.
