Hey guys, you know about that little brass piece that sticks out of the bowl on an IH carb? The one that has the little ears on it? What does that hurt when one of the ears is broken off? How do I remove it? Thanks...AC

I disagree with the comments below, if it is sticking out of the bowl, and has a shape rather like a thumb screw, that is the drain petcock. That is how you drained the distillate fuel out of the carb so you could then start the engine with gasoline. It won't hurt a thing if one of those ears is broken off.
The idle adjustment screw is located in the top of the carb, and does not have any wings. The load adjustment screw is located in the bowl, but it does not have any wings either. Both of these are adjusted with a screwdriver.

After I posted this and went to bed I realized that I wasn't very clear. I meant the little piece of brass tubing that sticks into the top part of the carb, but comes out of the TOP of the INSIDE on the bowl. I can sent a pic..It is notched, as if it were a screwdriver slot. One "ear" is broken off. Will that really make the tractor run differently? I am rebuilding my M carb. I soaked it in Gunk, thourghly cleaned it out, rebuilt it, and set it according to what the book said. It wouldn't even start. It has gas coming in, but couldn't fire. I took it back apart, checked everything, and tried it again...nothing. So, I put the old bowl off my loaner carb (so I could work in the tractor in the mean time) (the old bowl is off a 450 carb someone had it laying around) and I put the 450 bowl on my M carb. It ran well, but had a little miss in it when idleing, that the tractor DID NOT have when I was running the complete 450 assembly. It runs better than it ever did off idle, but misses lightly at low idle. The only thing that cures it, is when I turn the idle adjust jet (the one at an angle) all the way in. Any insight? Thanks, guys, AC

Still not real clear what you are saying, but I will see if I can shed a little light anyhow.
You said you soaked it in gunk, gunk makes a lot of products, and I am not familiar with all of them, but make sure the product you are using is for cleaning carbs for rebuilding. I have always been partial to the Mac's or NAPA brand . Completely disassemble your carb, soak all of the parts(except for what will be replaced) at least overnight. Remove those parts from the cleaner, and immediately rinse with HOT water, and then blow everything dry with compressed air, making sure to blow through all of the holes, ports, passages, etc., when you blow air into a hole, that air will come out another hole, if it doesn't, then the carb is not yet clean. Does this help? Also, after assembling the carb, turn it over in your hands and listen for the float moving around. You may need to tweek the float a little to keep it from rubbing the sides of the bowl, a common problem on M carbs. As far as the broken off ear thing, there should have been a new one of these in the overhaul kit.

That is the idle air bleed and controls the idle mixture for the carb. This jet is the biggest headache area for getting the engine to idle smoothly so be sure to clean it carefully.
It doesn't hurt if one of the "ears" is broken off; if you can clean the passage without removing the jet, fine & dandy. Use a fine copper wire strand from a tail light wire so as not to damage the jet. I just went through an "H" carb and had to drill out the jet and go to a local gunsmith to get a #5-40 thread tap to rethread the carb.
The new jet was less than $20 at my IH dealer.
NAPA has the thread tap if you need to order one; It is about $3. Mine is on order now.
P.S.: Use your tap & die set on all the screws & threaded holes; the carb fits together so much easier.

Thanks Wayne, I was just about to make a post about the same thing myself. I have 3 M carbs right now needing that jet, and one is busted off flush.
