Can someone tell me if they've ever seen a Farmall 706 with round wheel fenders, not the square flat top? Could've there been a wheatland version that might have come out with round fenders? I was also curious as to what diesel engine should be in the tractor and where the engine was made.

Thanks

We had a 65 model F706 Gas in the late sixties, sold it in '81 and it had the "clam shell" round fenders on it. I think the flat tops came out later that year.

The big round fenders were standard on the International 706. The Farmall was standard without any fenders. Early Farmall 706 had clamshell type fenders as optional. About the time the 1206 came out, the flat top fenders became an option for the Farmall 706. Throught the 706, 806, 1206 run, big curved fenders were standard on Internationals whereas Farmall's were standard without fenders. Headlights were mounted in the grille on International 706, 806, 1206. Headlights were mounted on side of gas tank on Farmall 706, 806, 1206 without fenders or with clamshell fenders. Headlights were mounted in fenders on Farmall 706, 806, 1206 with flat top fenders. Early 706, both Farmall and International had 282 cu in diesel engine made in USA by IHC. Later 706 both Farmall and International had 310 cu in diesel engine made in Germany by IHC.

Fenders- the 706 and 806 had small clamshell fenders from 1963 to early 1965. When the 1206 came out in 1965, they went to the flat-top fender. Wheatland tractors always had great big rounded fenders that extended way out over the tire.

Engines- From 1963 to November 1966, the 706 had the C-263 gas engine and the D-282 diesel, both built by IH here in the U.S. From November 1966, the 706 had the C-291 gas, which was just a bored-out C-263, and the D-310 diesel, built by IH at their plant in Germany.

Cabs- IH did offer factory-installed cabs on the 06, 26, 56, and 66 series, but they were built by other companies. IH started building their own cabs during the 66 series.

I thought maybe IH switched engines part way through a year. There's another website you can get tractor value. It gives an option for year and then gives you a list of engines to choose before it gives a tractor value. For a 1966 706 it only has the D-310 and a choice for a gas engine.

The problem I was having is that a friend has a 1966 706 with a D-282 not the 310. It also has the clamshell fenders which I didn't think was normal.

Thanks for the info.

Engine could be either 282 or Ger.310 if it has glow plugs it is a 282 it is a good engine, but must use glow plugs to start even in summer if you drink water over 15 or 20 mins. A Ger. 310 is a very good engine. The 282 was in the early one 310 the late ones not sure of the year change.

We have a 706 D dating from 1967, but don't know how to tell which engine it has. What is the simplest way to do this?? (From the discussion, sounds like the engine could be either the D-282 or the D-310.) The number stamped on the engine block is 52N4009*.

If you have a 1967 it should be the 310, it is real easy to tell just look at the injectors if there is a plug screwed into the top with an elec. wire running to it it is the 282. also on the 310 it has a water manifold about 4 inches in dia at front and tapers off to about 1inch at back on the right side. Mine is a 1967 with a 310.

Both of ours have round fenders on them. Don't know much about the wheatland tractors but I don't think ours are wheatland-I think there just normal 706s with round fenders. Both are gas, narrow front ends if that helps.

All were options. No fenders, round, flat top, or cab with integrated fenders. Or it could be order from the factory with no fenders, and the dealer installed an aftermarket cab, like Hiniker or Year-a-Round. If I remember correctly, you could order it without an operators platform, to accommodate a dealer or cab manufactures installed cab. I'm not getting younger, but I think our 966 was delivered to Year-a-Round for the cab, and then to the dealer.

Thanks, that's what I was curious about.

Do you happen to know if IH made a cab for the '06 or '56 series or were they all after market?

Play Farmer.

That's a very good question, that someone else is going to have to help with. I've only seen the Hiniker and Year-a-Round here in So. Minnesota. Probably because at that time they were both manufactured right here in Mankato, MN. They were on everything. Until the IH 86 series or the JD 30 series, with a few exceptions.

I'm waiting for a copy of a couple IH books to get in at the local bookstore. Problem is the books just seem to make me ask more questions. Sure am glad this web site's here. Thanks!

Yeah, I think it does help. Must of been narrow front ends had the round fenders. Maybe someone out there can say if this is true or not.

Thanks

I don't think it mattered on which front end was used. Both types of fenders and the wide front were all options. It all mattered on the dealer and the buyer on how it was set up.

The flat top fenders became available in 1965.Before that only the clamshell or wheatland types were available. They switched to the 310 diesel in 1967,the last year they were made.
