I just got an email from a fellow in India wanting to buy the tractor I have in the classifieds. He will send a casiers check for the amount listed. Is ok with waiting until the casiers check proves ok and is making all shipping arrangements himself. Do I send him my address and proceed? Seems a little unlikely to me that someone would want a McCormick Cub to ship to India..... ....What do you guys think???

Here's what likely will happen. The guy will send you a cashier's check for far more than the value of the tractor. He'll tell you to cash it and send the balance back to him. The check will bounce a week later. He'll have his money, you'll still have your tractor -- and a large rubber check your bank will expect you to cover. If it sounds too good to be true, it most often is. How do I know this? A friend of my daughter's got ripped off by this scam. The sad part of her deal was that her colleagues at work told her not to do it but the bank assured her that the check was good. A week later, the bank called to say the check bounced. Haven't heard yet who'll cover the $13,000 the bank sent overseas.

A friend sold his backhoe to an individual in South America. Great deal for both of them. The trick is to require an irrevocable letter of credit from an international bank, one recognized by your bank. Once your bank accepts the LOC, it's your money, and any problems that come up later are the bank's problems.

Dont do it I had a guy go as far as to call me and the guy was talking on the computer and have a person in the middle tell me what he wrote and the I would have to tell the lady what to type back to him. These guys take things to far sometimes. I couldn't belive they call me at my house for the tractor I was selling.

Well, if you do decide to go forward with this. I would have a new email address created from your ISP, and respond back with that. Also, have your bank create a separate "new" account to deposit it in. It may be a honest deal, but if you are defrauded by a foreigner, your legal options will be slim.

I have hard that cashiers checks can still be canceled for a period of 60 days. So be carefull.

Good luck! :)

How is it this scam goes? He sends you a worthless check for twice the purchase amount and wants you to refund the difference in cash? Delete this email and forget it.

There were more new tractors sold in INDIA last yea that any other place in the world. The MAHARINDA is built there in an old I-H PLANT. These are good tractors and a great seller in the US. The guy is probably a collector and further talks with him would be the way to go. There are people coming to IOWA and filling up contaniers with stuff old and new parts and on and on. This tractor collecting is world-wide. Sounds like he is not a scam i would check it out further and tell him of the scams that are going on then you can work out a deal that suits both of you.

Sounds legit to me. The scam is to send a counterfeit check for more than the amount and then he will have an emergency and need the extra money wired to him for medical emergency ,meanwhile the check gets mailed here and there and never gets cashed and you are out the money you wired to the scammer. Just hold the item till the check clears, then your @ss is completly covered.

Guys, I am confused.

This doesn't sound like the other scams. There are 3. main differences: 1. The person doesn't ask for you to send the difference back to him in cash before the deal, 2. He is willing to wait until your bank clears his check (you think your bank is going to give you the OK on a bogus cashier's check..... .I doubt it), and 3 he is going to provide his own transportation.

Other than finding out where you live and coming over and stealing it, I can't find a problem with this.

I do know that India has a lot of agriculture and a lot of poor farmers. I have heard that they still manufacture the N series Ford.

It is possible that this tractor is simple, easy to build and can provide an affordable tractor for an Indian family to raise food for their table.

My 2c

It's just a play on the same scam. He says he's sending a check for the asking price but sends a check for more than that and then calls frantically claiming a mistake in the amount. He asks you to send him the overage. This scam can work because banks tend to honor cashiers checks and will often credit your account. On foreign checks your bank may find out weeks later the check is bogus. Many banks are likely aware of these scams now so maybe they've altered procedure. He says he'll arrrange transportation but never does it. He never intends to transport it.

its's not a scam. Time to stop maligning the hard working tractor collectors of the third world!

Before you go on, though...could you cash a check for me? See, the banks aren't open until tomorrow and the wife needs some polish for her wooden leg....

Just delete. If they get a return response they will keep pestering your e-mail box. I get those all the time. There's nobody in India looking to buy your wares. At the very least it's someone just looking to jerk you around.

Robert. There are too many legitimate buyers here in the U.S. and Canada to consider the hassle of dealing across the pond. What difference would it be to send a tractor to the fence row or to India. Either way it will never be heard from again. I would ignore the E.Mail and find a legitimate buyer.

Even if it is not a scam, I would skip it. Be aware, you are going to get hit with foreign currency exchange fees, hassles in shipping and so on. I've done a few small items out of the US and have gotten paid ok, but learned a few things.
