Super A Oil Pressure; Oil Pump

I was going over some of the old comments about oil pressure in the C-113 engine. It has been stated that the oil pump warps over time and has to be planed or milled down. Is this true? Will someone explain to me exactly how this is accomplished. My Super A does the same thing, it has great oil pressure at first then falls back to 5 to 7 psi. Is there something else I should be looking at? Thanks in advance!

OK, What exactly IS the proper oil pressure range for a healthy engine? I agree with the screen issue, couldn't believe how plugged up mine was, cleaning that should be the first course of action. I've also heard of guys installing a o-ring on the pickup tube connection for the "floating" type screens to elimenate pump volume loss, any thoughts?

You wouldn't believe how nasty the screen on these oil pumps can be. Mine was almost completely plugged up.

I had this problem with my Super A. I went the glass and sandpaper route and it worked great. I started with 80 or 100 grit and finished off with 320. I wet sanded the whole time it keeps the paper clean and cutting better. Definately get the correct gasket(s). If I remember right they can be stacked for proper clearance. It only took about 2-3 hours for the whole process.

Two things that come to mind are:

1)Excessive bearing clearance, in other words, it is time for new main and/or rod bearings or an engine overhaul.

2) Warped oil pump cover. These covers will warp over time and prevent the pump from building pressure when the oil gets hot. This would be my first check. Drop the oil pan and remove the oil pump, I think you'll see how once the pan is off. Disassemble and clean thoroughly, especially the oil pickup screen, if it is clogged you can have low oil pressure, too.

Lay the cover on a piece of glass and use a feeler gauge around the edge to find the excess clearance. You can try putting some sandpaper on the glass and trying to flatten the cover by sanding but more than likely you will need a new one from IH. They are around $70.00. In any case you will need a new gasket for the cover. They are paper thin so don't try to substitute as they control the gear clearance.
