Does anyone know where I can get a live hydraulic set-up(pump, hoses etc.) for an M ? Also, will a pump from a SM work on a regular M ?

Be sure to install a good releif valve in the system. You may also want to consider replacing the cam timing gear with one from a SM or newer tractor. I had to replace a block for a customer that overloaded their hyd. system and shattered two timing gears, cracked the block, blew out the front timing cover, etc. Big big mess. He contacted me because the engine wouldn't start. He had no idea of the extremity of the problem. Talked to an old IH mechanic and he said that was not uncommon. Just beware. :) It works great when it's done correctly! Good luck and have fun!

A hydraulic pump from a Super M will only fit a "M" if the engine serial number is above 228082. The older front timing cover is different and only two mounting holes for the hyd. pump line up correctly. If your tractor is older you can replace the front timing cover and then the Hyd pump will fit correctly and all four bolts will fit. I have been there and done that. The part number on the newer cover is 354 955 R31. That's the number for the later "M" and also "SM" tractors with gas engines. If you want me to I can look around in the shed some warmer day. I think I might have a front cover for a "SM". I know the block and crank and other parts lay there and I think the cover is still there. E-mail me if you are interested.

Good luck MN Charlie

Yes a Super M pump will work, one may also have the manifold block that bolts to the pump which has pipe thread holes you can plumb from. I have a 1951 M equiped this way using the rear end for reservoir. If you use the rear end this way you will need to replace some of the seals due to the Hy-tran leaks, but that's no problem. Pto, front countershaft and possibly axle seals. More than likely they need replaced anyway.

This is excellent news! I had not heard about the change at SN 228082 before. I was dreading buying all that new stuff from a Super M to make the conversion. Mine is a 1951 M, SN 250979. Next time I'm in Iowa, I'll prowl around for a set of Super M timing gears when I look for a Super M pump.

Thanks RB. I already replaced the seals on the pto and front counter shaft so I'm half way home.
