Mechanical Tractor Log-Splitter?

Has anyone ever seen, heard of, or built a log splitter that runs off a tractor PTO? I have a C, but no 3-pt hitch and no hydraulics except for the lift arms.

It would seem to me that a gear-driven splitter could be run off the PTO, much like those electric motor driven models that are out there.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I see a lot of comments from people who haven't used one and don't understand them, but here's my mechanical splitter. I'm not interested at all in a hydraulic one... this one works so well and is completely safe.

Good grief! Those hydraulic ones could chop your leg off! :-)

George that cone looks similar to (but not the same as) the "Stickler" brand (www.thestickler.com). Where did you get it?

I'm guessing that the long pipe is to keep the log from spinning correct?

George,

What kind of a gearbox is that? Do you ever split red elm?

Ken,

I got the gearbox and cone at a consignment sale for $15!!! Someone had mounted it like a post hole digger on a boom. It looks like he intended to just set it down on the wood withoug giving thought to the wood spinning. :-(

I'm told the gear box is from an auger, but I don't know. It is a 2:1 speed reduction, which at my age is a bonus.

I haven't split any elm at all but I think it would do it... just slower because of the stringy part.

George, two questions...

Is there a manufacturer's name anywhere on that cone of yours? (Cast into it or on a tag inside somewhere?)

Also, when you are facing the rotating cone as you split wood, does it turn clockwise or counter-clockwise? I notice that the "Stickler" cones are made to rotate in the opposite direction from what a PTO turns. In other words, in order to make use of one on a tractor I would have to reverse the direction of travel.

Please check out my web page
www.leejsackett.com
and follow the link to the log splitter section.

I have custom built many hydraulic splitters for various tractors and setups and would be very happy to help anyone out with a project. The harder I have to think about it, the more fun it is! :) As far as the H farmall, the belly pump has enough power to split most big logs in my splitter. Done it lots of times. We could tap into the hyd. on that C loader and run it to a hyd. splitter, too. Lots of options. Email me at lsackett@iname.com and we can talk more.

Thanks!

Keneth,There is a pto wood splitter manufactured about 30 years ago called a Bliss spliter,it had a stationary front and back and there was a double bladed ax that moved in the middle, that way it would split both ways.it also had a table on it where you could arange the wood. This splitter would keep 3 good men busy.all of the comerical wood dealers had one. This splitter was manufactered by Mr.Bliss,Ashburn,VA along with the bliss stump ax which was a ax that was mounted on a machine that would hold a tree up-right and cut it off at the stump,he also designed a snow basket that was used on a large tractor to move snow

There is such a thing. One brand was called unicorn. It runs direct off your pto at 540 rpm and is a spinning wedge mounted on a table and you just push the log into the spinning wedge. It is a very dangerous splitter but it works. It looks a lot like a big blade balancer.

I have a 3 pt log splitter on my Massey. I use quick disconnects on the hydraulic hoses, and snap it into the hoses for my loader. NOrthern Tool & Equipment (NOrthern Hydraulics),has two models offered for 3 Point, both have there own valve. ONe for $430, and another for $570. I have one similar to the cheaper one.. It works great.

Never seen or heard of a gear driven type. Would be simpler and safer to use a pto driven hyd. pump. I'm not sure how you would be able to change directions on your ram or splitter mechanism. I'm planning on building a wood splitter for my H. I think I'm going to mount a hyd. pump on the side of the frame and belt drive it off the crankshaft, giving me live hydraulics.

Do you have a 3-pt hitch on your H ?

Where is a good source for a PTO driven hydraulic pump?

I've got a Saginaw 3 point on my H. It makes that old tractor so handy, I don't know how anybody can get along without one.

Northern Tool and Equipment has pto pumps, but they're kinda pricey - about $300+. Check on Ebay and local farm auctions if you can.

Hi, neighbor had one that was driven by pto. It was like a big wood screw in the shape of cone.
It had a small table that you set the block of wood on and then pushed it into the spinning cone.
As the threads on the cone started to screw into the block it would split. I always thought it was very DANGEROUS. If clothing or anything attached to you got caught in the spinning cone, I had vision of a spinning person. There was no emergency shut off.
