Power units on combines

How did the old power units (A engine) fit onto the old pull type 52R combines? I have found a power unit from a hay baler but it just has a pulley for a belt. Did the combines have the same? Some of you have been gracious enough to answer my questions on these old pull types so I appreciate it in advance if you can help me again.

Dad bought a new 1953 Model 64 IH combine in 54 and it had a C-113 or C-123 engine. Crank start, lots of power for the 6 1/2 foot head. Pulled with 39 F-20....I think he said that a Cub engine was standard, the C-113/123 was an option....combine is rusting away in fencerow..motor was salvaged years ago to power neighbors irrigation pump....Cmore

On the 52R, if it didn't have PTO drive from the tractor IH used either a Continental Y-69 flathead 4 cylinder or later they used a Farmall Cub engine for power. They were connected to an over-center clutch which had a very short shaft connected to the gearbox on the combine. The engines were officially attachments and you could easily convert back and forth between a PTO drive or an engine drive.

Shown is a pic of my Continental-equipped 52R. If you look close you can see the clutch and the shifter lever coming out of it and connected to the control rod going up to the rear of the tractor. When you engage the clutch, there is a linkage on the other side connected to the governor linkage on the engine to give it full throttle. I also have a Cub driven model too. Setup is similar there. I think the 76 combine used the C-123 engine, the late 64 might have used it too.
