W6 stuck in reverse

I lent my trusty ol' W6 to a neighbour , went to check on them a little while later , they were jammed in to a fence , stuck in reverse !.
The tractor has never given gear selection trouble before !.
I tried to get the lever out , but it looks like a "farmer repair" job , it has a bolt replacing the pin , and i can't stop it from turning , it looks like the head was ground off !.
I think I will -
1/ jack the nearside wheel up, and try to get the lever back in to the reverse position.
2/weld something on to the bolt , so that i can hold it , to undo the nut.
3/Replace it with an original gearlever and pin from an AW 6 parts tractor , that are in VGC.
My question is , the casting in the gearbox housing is very loose , how will I tighten this up , for the pin ?.
What electrics should i remove from the tractor , before I stick weld ?.
Regards Rob Johnson.

I have drilled out the hole to the next bigger size. (½ I think) You also have to drill out the little swivel piece inside. I never worry too much about welding, just make sure you hook the ground cable directly to the part you are welding on. if tou have a torch just cut the bolt off.

Rob,I would always disconnect the battery cables when I was welding on a tractor. At least the ground cable.

Well , the weather is playing its hand now. Its 110+F outside , blowing a very hot north wind . Its a declared total fire ban day , so no welding , cutting or grinding !.This could go on for a week or more !.
I wonder if there is a cold preparation that would enable me to stick something on to that bolt/pin , and enable me to take the nut off ?.
I checked out the selectors on the AW 6 , so now I have an idea what I am aiming for , IF ONLY I could get this pin out !.
