300 cylinder upgrade 3 9/16 to 3 5/8...worth it?

I've got the engine of my 300 apart for "freshening up" and cleaning prior to a paint job this summer. I'm having the head shaved and doing some other work in an effort to bump the HP up a bit. I've found a source for a 3 5/8" bore pistons/ sleeve kit ($325...about average?). Anyway, the trctor runs fine now and doesn't NEED new cylinders, but it'd be no problem for me to cahnge them now while she's opened up. My question is this...is it worth the $325? Will I really notice that displacement increase or should I "not fix what ain't broke"? Anyone out there done this on their 300, or an H for that matter? Thanks, Zak

Hey Zak. If you do get the new engine stuff.
Maybe I can buy your old parts sleves, pistons and ect. I need to get my 300 running and am way over tractor budget so maybe we can both save some money.

I put the oversize liners and high altitude pistons in my H and it made a big difference. Irv

When I overhauled my 300 I installed the 3 5/8 pistons, a propane head, propane intake and exhaust manifold. Let me tell ya I could really notice the difference. It now on the dynamometer it will pull 50hp at 540 pto rpm

Well, let me refine this question a little. Aside from on the dyno and in the field, could you tell a difference just listening to her run? How about just driving around?

KellyC, I've been keeping an eye on your progress on your website with the 300 and 400. Good job on getting your TA done! I may have to do mine, or it may just be out of adjustment. I bought my 300 "knowing" the IPTO was out, only to discover that the previous owner had broken off the seasonal-disconnect lever trying to engage it and assumed she was done! A new lever from the junkyard and she's good as new! If I do swap sleeves and pistons out, we'll talk about mine. They look great from the top and bottom and the sleeves have a nice polish to them. It's why I'm dabating this in the first place. If the bores were bad, it'd be a no-brainer to me to swapo them out. So a swap at this point to the larger bore is kinda for "fun", although expensive fun! I just want to know that I'll be able to hear a difference...gotta get my $$$ worth, ya know! Zak

No difference in sound or feel in unloaded condition.

Roger that!! Glad to hear you lucked out on the PTO. Dont think I will be so lucky on mine. rear unit is locked up tight. I might get lucky and just have to loosen up the bands.. Maybe :-)
