Magneto switch on M. D.

The wire comming out of the intake manifold on my 1948 M.D is not hooked up to anything. I know it is the magneto grounding switch. Seems someone disconected it form the ground on the magneto. Is their a reason for this? Tractor seem to run good without it. What does the grounding switch do anyhow? Would it be O.K to reattach it? Thanks for any help. John

The idea is to ground the mag when in diesel mode so that there is no spark. Check the switch to see if it grounds properly when you switch the lever to the diesel position and if that works attach a wire from the switch to the mag. Geoff

Geoff, How would I know if the switch is grounding proberly? Were exactly is the switch located? In the manuals I have not been able to locate it. All I have now is the wire comming out of the manifold.

The magneto switch is in a chamber in the front end of the intake manifold. There is a cover there with a couple of screws to remove to get to the switch. If the wire is still connected to the switch, you won't have to remove the cover to check the switch. You just need a multi meter. Set the meter to resistance (ohms). Put the switch over lever in diesel and put one lead of the meter on the wire to the switch and the other to a good ground. You should read near zero ohms, or at most 4 or 5 ohms. Then change the switch over lever to gasoline and measure again. Resistance should be high, maybe 100,000 ohms or so. I think it best to have the switch working, because you don't need the plugs to be sparking when on diesel.
