The two front wheels on my 300U are quite wobbly. My neighbor says some wobble is ok, but i think these are too loose. Is this a spindle problem? Do the spindles or bearings wear out to cause something like this? Thanks for any help.

Wait till you get the wheels off. On the inside of the hub is a seal. Old and dry and torn and leaks water ETC. Replace the nice rusty bearings. Wash out the hub with kerosine or with a little gas mixed in, OUT SIDE IN THE YARD, and get the hub spotless. Also gently sraighten out the hub caps and put a nice thick hand made cork gasket there so no more water can get in. If you have knuckel problems or linkage, that is a whole nother story! The front hubs on my dads 300 I drilled and fitted grease fittings a long time ago. Once you fill the hub with grease do a once a year gentle pump with the grease gun till a little grease just ozzes out of the rear seal.

The other thing you need to look at is the wobble caused by bad bearings on the front wheels or worn/loose steering gears. The steering knuckles can also be worn. A little wear on several parts can add up to some wobble. It is not uncommon for this older tractors to wobble some. With my C I just pull lightly to the left and then to the right if it gets to wobbleling too much. A project for another day. I don't consider mine to be excessive so not a big deal for me.

The wheel should not shake on the spindle, but should turn free. Take the hub caps off and tighten the nuts, but while they are off make sure the bearings have grease. If the hubs don't have a grease fitting in them drill a hole into the bearing cavity thread it and put a fitting in it. They don't need to be greased often depending on use or if you drive thru water regulary. If the threads should be stripped you can get a double nut that screws on the stripped threads and the other nut is screwed on that nut which is tappered and it will tighten it on the threads.

It's time to jack up the tractor, remove the wheels and hubs, and have a look. You are probably looking at replacing the bearings, or at the very least removing, cleaning, and repacking the bearings. Your neighbor is wrong, there should be no detectable play. Your owners manual should have a section on how to do all of this.
